What I gather is that the pricier diffusers tend not to clog and provide longer trouble-free service (with steady stream of fine bubbles that dissipate into the water quickly). One cheap diffuser I once used had a cloggy membrane that produced horrid large bubbles. Nowadays I use reactors (plugged into my Eheim outflow pipe) which dissolve the Co2 fully.
While not always true (sometimes there are big brands which are really crappy - think famous soft drinks or fashionwear/furnitue that is all design and no function), premium brands are usually priced high because of what they deliver (in terms of service life, reliability, after-sales and other intangibles). All too often, I think many people fail to look beyond the raw price into the total cost of ownership for a product.
