a recommended filter should be able to turn over your tank 3 times in an hour. that means, you should look for a filter that has a flow rate of about 120 gallon/hour.
eheim is a good brand, well known for its reliability.
I am setting up a 46 gal planted tank and am looking for recommendations for a canister filter? Make? Size?
