Tried. Kept some glosso and one marimo ball with 1 shrimp. Powered by a 5w single led. All life kept in a ikea slom jar.

Shrimp, snail, baby endler.. Unfortunately nothing survived. The plants survived though.

I stopped after the snail went up the lorry.. Now the jar is there by my desk with marimo and glosso.

I think mine failed due to the size if the tank, too small. Maybe a larger one? I am not sure. Tested the water, 0 ammonia, low nitrates.. 0 nitrites.

Anyone tried making a sealed shrimp terrarium?

I think a jar would not be a very good tank for shrimp..

I tried putting 2 Sunkist Shrimp in a betta tank with a LED light.. There is just shrimp soil, coral branch and an unknown plant, they have survived and molt shell inside.. At the moment into the 4th week.. Only difference is that it is in aircon area..

No parameter tested though.. Shrimps added in on the same day that I put soil and water.. Weekly just remove a little water and add back a little water..

The eBay listing mentions "tiny red shrimp" but they didn't specify its cherry shrimps... my guess is they are using opae ula shrimps which are super hardy and commonly used in such small sealed setups.

You can check with the LFS called CRS Haven, they specialize in sealed bottle setups with opae ula shrimps.

Re: Anyone tried making a sealed shrimp terrarium?

how to differentiate cherry from opae ula? look so similar. i have always thought that its cherry that they put in those sealed bottles.

those shop assistants at claimed that they use a "special solution". any one any idea what's so special?

i wish to attempt one with a 1 liter bottle.put a brunch of flame moss and 2 morimo balls. I'm not sure if 1x shrimp will provide sufficient carbon dioxide for the plants to survive. what's the volume of your bottle, Erctheanda?

the ones sold look so bare, i wonder what's the reason.

Opae Ula shrimps have a shorter rostrum, stubbier carapace and tend to be smaller (compared to cherry shrimps)... if you google some images on them you can easily spot the differences.

I've kept them before in those sealed ecospheres many years ago (they were very popular "trendy" gifts at that time), the opae ula shrimps inside were still alive after almost a year, until i gave them away. The reason why they can survive in such conditions is because they can use up their own body mass if there are not enough food or nutrients (which is often the case), so they actually shrink after each molt and slowly become smaller over time. Other types of shrimps kept in the same conditions would have died very quickly.

The "special" solution that is sold by shops is usually brackish water, opae ula shrimps live in brackish water conditions.

Unfortunately, very few plants can survive long term in brackish water, hence you don't usually see plants in those ecospheres or sealed bottles, except maybe algae (marimo ball is a form of algae).

their not freshwater, do a Google search and look at the Wikipedia result.

some shrimp haven should still sell, you can look see the price.

but, I strongly don't recommend doing a complete sealed or never open to feed type eco sphere. it's just a slow death.

These opae ula shrimps are very much different from. Little cherry shrimps, especially in price.

These setups usually are setup specially to provide adequate amount of energy to the shrimps with a minimum amount of light.

Just like all tanks, a balance in water parameters and the tiny ecosystem will have to be maintained to ensure survival, and thriving of the plants and shrimps.

Sealed tanks are a bad idea due to our climate. Opae ula look as if they are suitable for such sealed systems but in reality the poor animals are subjected to unnecessary "torture".
