Question about snail in new tank

Hi guys, this is day 4 since I scaped my first tank and planted some flora in it. I did a water change at day 3, with anti chloramine and ATM colony added in with the fresh water. Spotted a few baby snails, squished them as Im not too fond of aquatic snails (I do have a pet garden snail in my garden though), then I saw this bugger..

I tried to find out from pictures on the internet and it looks like a ramshorn snail. I'm not 100% sure though, anybody know what species of snail this is?

There are currently no fish in the tank, and Im not really in a hurry to put them in. Should I put anti snail treatment? What are the ramifications? I read that it can screw up your nitrogen cycling. Or should I keep the snail for anti algae purposes. I have about 10 fishes and 2 wood shrimp to put in, so not too heavy a bioload. And I feed only once a day so I don't think I overfeed. I'm not sure if I let this snail live, I will regret it later when there is a population explosion. After seeing pictures of ramshorn eggs, I'm pretty sure I have seen them floating at the top of the waterline. I did remove them though but you never know where else these eggs are hiding.

    Experienced forumers please advise!

Ramshorn yes, but eggs normally in foilage or on your tank walls.
They multiply fast if you overfeed, easily can control population.

Most of us do have some snails but not alot, if there is too much we just give them away or kill them... free food for fish..

in my experience, the most effective way to get rid of snails will also get rid of the shrimps.

What i would do, is to introduce 2 assassin snails into your tank. it will keep your snail population under control. it will not totally remove them, but at least it will not be a menace.

Assassin snail and manual removal are the best way. Or if you want the more nasty way get a dwarf puffer, your snail would not stand a chance. However you will want to sell off your puffer after use. It will likely have the fin nippy nature and will attack/eat YOUR shrimps.

Ok this all sounds like good advice, I will observe the snail population first and see if its under control, otherwise the assassin snails will come into the picture. 2 is enough for a 2 feet tank right? Thanks!

You know you have to pay to have ramhorn from LFS right? So keep it since it will help you in algae cleaning. At least it is not pond snail. Haha

    Like this.

If the population is really out of control in the future, I am sure there are people around to help you offload them

Re: Question about snail in new tank

Well I have decided to keep the snail, and I spotted another baby snail somewhere as well. Like you guys said I can offload to people if they need some cleanup crew. I guess a population increase is also a good indicator if I am getting my fundamentals wrong, eg. overfeeding, overpopulation. Anyway since I am cycling my tank, the driftwood is exuding that funky white stuff and the snails seem to love trolling around in it. I hope they eat it all!

It is just my luck, if i got ramhorn, it is equivalent to striking toto. The snails that hitchhike in my tank are pond snail.

Re: Question about snail in new tank

I have rams horn snail in my tank. I don't know the side effect of having too many snails yet. I watch snails everyday and I know they are bisexual and one snail can reproduce alone but I saw my snails mating today. Really fascinating and slow.

The bright red translucent thing at the side of the shell goes into the other snail. I guess it is mating... Really a guess.

    Anybody seen it before also?
