Dunno, I once tried it, but still the BBA stayed, even multiplied. That was when I was using DIY yeast CO2. I think ketapang is used more for its benefits it brings to the fauna of the aquarium.
Ketapang lowers pH, which makes calculating dissolved CO2 a hassle. (I normally aga aga minus 1.0 from my pH reading when using ketapang in order to calculate CO2)
However the dennerle website selling their Trocal UV stop lamps mentioned that UV light filtration using peat coloured water is used to control algae in garden ponds.
If that is true, the tannins from not only ketapang, but also new bogwood is effective in controlling algae too.
