I bought a 2260 used from a hobbyist and flow rate was rather weak. Opened up everything gave it a thorough cleaning with hot water and found small snails comming out from the canister return port.

Will definitely look into that too... Thanks

    Re: Eheim Classic 2211

If the motor and impeller are still running and there is no outflow, it probably means the filter lost its siphon and is now just churning around water inside the canister... there could be a possibility that even without any power outage or cut-off, with the difference in height of the water level and your pipes, the siphon could gradually become weaker over time and then suddenly drop away (probably happens over the course of a few weeks).

Canister filters are designed as closed loop systems which rely on a balanced siphon when both outflow and inflow pipes are submerged under the tank's water level (that's why they can be less strong and consume less power than pumps but still get similar flow rates), for normal tanks if you raise the outflow pipe high above the water level (which turns it into an open loop system) and switch the filter off, you'll notice the water level in the outflow pipe drain out and drop to the water level of the tank, then when you switch the filter back on, the filter will have to use power to push the water back up above the water line and out into the tank.

The Eheim 2211 has quite a low flow rate at 300 l/ph, so that might be a reason why it can't maintain a permanent siphon in your particular setup with the outflow positioned so much higher than the water level. Maybe you could consider switching to a higher flow rate filer and it might help.

Bro, you should physically checked the filter when you are back in SG for now these are all the possibilities of what could, might or already happened to your filter.
My guess is, the filter lost its siphon ability and that why its stop working.

I know you guys are right but assuming all things constant... I still can figure why it will siphon nicely for that 3-4 weeks... Then stop siphoning...

Anyway, I will check all that has been mentioned by the helpful people here..

I will update once I get home on Thursday.

Maybe the media are still clean until 3-4 weeks later when it is filled with gunk hence the flowrate dropped till it lost siphon power. If this is the case, removing some of the media might helps. Slowly but surely, you might get the answer.

BFG has a good point there... i notice that smaller filters tend to clog up quicker, especially in planted tanks with all the organic debris getting trapped in the various layers of filtration. So a gradual reduction in flow rate over time is expected. You'll have to either space out the media to allow for more through flow, or clean your filter more often.

Definitely remove some media as a first option with a replacement of the main seal.. Thanks a lot folks. Will keep you posted. Waiting to fly home.

I hope all your fish will still be okie. If all else fails check the hose joints, seals and pump head for air leakage. I used Vaseline on all the rubber gaskets to maintain the airtight seal.

Hi folks, cleaned up filter, change new white sponge, removed a handful of media, added Vaseline to seal and cut hoses shorter to remove kink... See how long this last.. Thanks to all who advised...

another thing your set-up is a paludarium , better to mark a water level somewhere , in case of evaporation
