    This happened to me before - situation can still be salvaged! What's important is to NOT turn the filter back on immediately. When a mature biofilter loses power for a few hours, the anaerobic bacteria will bloom and produce hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell). When you turn it back on and the sulphides enter your tank, it'll kill the fauna. To avoid this, clean out the whole filter (for larger systems may need to scrub the pipes too) before restarting flow. Activated carbon can also help to adsorb remaining sulphides. At this point, the biofilter is pretty much dead so you'll be back at cycling phase and may need to do more frequent water changes. It's hard work but for shrimps I'd say totally worth the effort!
