That, my friend, is the best thing to do. I always do that nowadays. I never leave the inlet pipe bare without a ribbed sponge.

Doing that helps keep the internal media good and unclogged by dirt. Then the BB there can survive happily.

In the beginning, I used to wash the ribbed sponge frequently when I see dirt buid up, but nowadays, I just leave it there and do not wash the dirt away. This is because the sponge itself also contains good bacteria. If you have fry fish, the sponge will also prevent them from being sucked in.

Most people just cover the HOF intake pipe with a sponge pre-filter, which basically makes it a sponge filter too. There are lots of different sizes of sponge pre-filters so just seach around the various LFS to find suitable ones.

You can also buy those sponge filter sets which have tube connections to attach to HOF intake pipes too.

Note that the sponge filters will decrease the HOF flow rate and over time as it traps debris the flow rate will decrease further, so you'll have to rinse loose debris off the sponges whenever necessary.

    Thanks for sharing bros.

I have a 1.5ft by 0.9ft shrimp tank. Thinking of getting a stronger HOF maybe a 470L/hr flow rate with attaching a sponge filter.

    Open for suggestion.
