I am wondering if having a ripple effect for my lighting have any benefits other than aesthetics.

Is an even spread with no ripples whatsoever better or does the ripple effect have benefits like being more like natural sunlight etc?

Also assuming it has benefits, is the lost of CO2 due to the constant water surface movement worth it?

    Re: Ripple effect

I guess it more of aesthetics... the ripple effect is usually from lights like MHX or LEDs, probably due to their directional lighting characteristics.

Surface agitation helps in gas exchange, abit of smooth ripple from a lily pipe is fine (better then just stagnant water), it wouldn't off-gas as much Co2 compared to as if the surface is constantly bubbling from a high flow air stone or splashing from a spray bar.

    Re: Ripple effect

Hmm ok thanks for the reply. When i got the time and space, i will experiment with 2 similar setup but one with ripple and one without and see if there are any differences.

Anyone else has any opinion on this or even better live experience?

Not sure if there are any benefits, but some led lights like aquasky that are not using Cree led do not produce the ripple effect.
