Hi experts, like to check if anyone has a light set for 30cm cube planted tank with in built timer to recommend. My tank is in a confined space so can't use those ikea timer. Thank you very much.

    Re: Lighting advice

Maybe some forummers can advice more, but i think the Maxspect R420R (Razor) Nano 60W is something you can look at.
it has something called time points which can be used to control intensity at certain time of the day. I think it can be configured such that the time points is reduced to zero so that no more light comes out after a certain time.

Currently what I am using is a house brand light hood from NA and it is 2 x 9W PL 6400 k . Is that sufficient to plant Moss? I calculated my tank should be about 33.6 l (8 gallon).

Reason why I wanted a timer is because currently my photo period is about 11-12 hours and I am experiencing brown algae. I supposed that is due too long a photo period?

It should be sufficient to grow moss with that. I have grown moss with less. But the moss I have are low requirement ones. What kind of moss are you keeping?

Brown algae could be due to the long intensity.. But I feel it's more of filter media and tank not completely cycled.

    Re: Lighting advice

Hi Eric, thanks! I have only java moss at the moment. Filter is those gex internal filter. I do fishless cycling for about a month but NH3 still at 0.5 ppm (sera test liquid) nitrite zero. I thought it could be the water conditioner I used that caused the ammonia reading. I have microbelift ammonia remover and, seachem prime. I just add some fish flakes once in a while to keep the cycle going

    Re: Lighting advice

the ammonia reading should not be coming from the conditioner (if the conditioner is prime). when do you measure the ammonia levels? is it directly after you add the flakes? if you have soil in the tank, you do not need to add any flakes to start the cycle. alot of soils have humus which produces ammonia.

java moss should be ok. any other flora?

Measured as of yesterday. Changed 40% water the day before. probably about 12 hours after adding flakes (add in morning measure at night). No other flora at the moment. Had some water wisteria but melted within 2 Weeks. Have some gex red soil in it since day 1. It says to add direct, no washing required on the pack so I didn't pre wash the soil

maybe a picture of the set up? so that we know what we are advising for.
wisteria melting could be due to insufficient lighting or CO2/nitrates.

also, would also be great if you can get those 5 in 1 test strips to test for nitrates and KH/GH for a start.

    Re: Lighting advice

Sorry, didn't see the reply. Here is a photo of the set up. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1393044405.239408.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1393044421.087336.jpg reason why I need the in built timer is because I got no space for a ikea type timer. Filter is those small internal filter, again no space for a canister.
