Has anyone seen Pygmy Corydoras around? in LFS or anywhere. I manage to see it once, however now looking for it to be part of my new 4ft tank. Since all the experts in Corydoras are around, can anyone advise if there are other types of Corydoras that are of small/miniature size. The characteristics that i do not like abt cory are they tend to grow huge in size. Thanks

    Hi JT,

    You probably saw Corydoras pygmaeus.

    Corydoras pygmaeus

This type of corydoras grows up to 3 cm only and are suitable for planted tanks if you do not have large or aggressive fishes. You might like to know that a matured apisto will love an occasional cory snack now and then.

Besides Corydoras pygmaeus, there are 2 other types of pygmy corydoras seen locally..

    Corydoras hastatus

    Corydoras habrosus

These two types also grow to a maximum size of 3 cm only. Of the three types, Corydoras pygmaeus are the most commonly seen here, followed by Corydoras habrosus. Mainland Fish Farm usually import Corydoras pygmaeus quite frequently, as do Qian Hu Fish Farm. So these are also common at a lot of LFS. But the trouble is that these fishes are rather inconspicious so you have to look out for them.

Also seen in the local market are Corydoras xinguensis. These grow up to 4 cm and are also good for planted aquaria and they are not active diggers. These are currently available at Gan's Fish Farm, which means LFS should be getting them soon. If not, ask for them and they might bring it in for you.

    Corydoras xinguensis

Do take note that for pygmy cories, best to keep a larger shoal. Perhaps like 10 to 20 pieces. Or else, you may hardly get to see them.

    Hope the above helps.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Beautiful pics.....would any of the "3cm" species be a problem with Badis badis in a heavily planted aquarium?
