Read that the recommended amt of timing for lights should be btw 6-8 hrs , lesser for the initial part to prevent algae from overtaking the tank.
Hi again,
i switched on my lights only after about 8pm, after coming home work. my parents don allow me to switch on the lights becos it wasn;t attended. so i switch on from 8pm to next morning 8pm, about 11-12 hours. is it ok to on at such odd hours? will my plants grow or the growth will be slow? please advise.

Hi Ray
I believe as long as ur lights r on for that continuous stretch, it shldn't matter when that stretch occurs. However, u may need to adjust the duration accordingly shld there be any adverse effects such as algae etc., & this wld be unique to each tank setup. You'd need trial & error before deciding how many hrs is gd for ur tank.
U'd also have to consider other factors such as the light requirements of ur plants & the amt of light supplied in terms of wattage.
For me, the lights' r on for 10.5 hrs fr 2130hrs to 0800hrs bec there's insufficient fast growing plants & there's a risk of algae breakout.
Just my opinion

It is ok if you on the light at nite.
Do you use a timer? It is better to use a timer if you haven't get one yet.
but I notice some plants seem to "know" the time of day. Eg Cambomba red and E. stellata, in the late evening their leaves will "close-up" even though the lights are still on. My tank does not get any daylight. So if these plants some how knows that it is night, might it not cause them to go nuts with the reverse cycle?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

How do i add a timer to my lights?
the part where you plug it in
the timer plugs into that
and the light plug will go into the timer
personally
i find having longer periods of lighting ONCE your tank is established will give you more flowers
huh....not quite understand, sorry.
btw how mcuh is the timer? where to get it?
most electrical carry them..
Look soemthing like this but 3 pin plug instate of two. The pic show the "THEBEN" brand. There is other brand too.----------------

Can get from Best Denki at $10+. Look at electrical dept. Some of the budget store that sell battery blah blah blah also got sell.
if dun have a budget, i propose u get a digital timer, they dun breakdown that easily... and they look kewl![]()
how much is the digital one?
$30+ - $40
Having odd times doesn't mean that the plants will not grow or will grow slower, when your plants got use to the time it will still be the same be it we stwitch on in the morning or in the night, don't have to worry so much. Yes getting a digital timer is good.
Cheers!

Hi Ray,
I pity the fishes (if u hv them) ,no need to sleep[],daylight for 24 hours unless they are in a dark area where there are less light accessing into the tank during daytime.
Mine start at 8am-12noon,off 12-4pm then on at 4pm-10pm. My fishes always get a shock after the timer shut off the lights.Thought of getting a dimmer light to reduce the afterdark shock.Any comment ?
u want which type? those that u need to put wires and fix and connect them can cost like $8 for analog and more for digital type.. but those acting as a plug type can cost like $20-28 at some lfs.. some electrical shops might have them but different designs and different prices too.

edwin, what kind of fish do you have that get shocks when the lights are off? mine, from cory to tetra to discus all don't care about the lights
once they're used to it it shouldn't be a problem
