a sand substrate for such a scape (anubias nana & xmas moss) is fine, but u will still have to dose some fertilisers in the long run.

for plants such as anubias nana (With rhizomes), u should tie them onto rocks/driftwoods and refrain from burying the rhizomes and roots in the substrate. burying will cause it to rot, they need some degree of water flow to those parts!

    Last few questions:

    1) where can I find such sands and what's the name and the cost?

    2) can I actually use the sand from the beach and of cos wash it lots of times to get rid of the salt and other impurities.

    Thks

    1) sand close to white? Or u want white sand? You can go for ans or sudo sand... slight brown easily available in lfs...

    2) the answer is no, beach sand has high content of salt, corals etc... this 2 element alone will cause your water parameter to go haywire.

If you are really on budget, lurk in aq marketplace...you can find best deals there... or you can settle for lapis sand... which is one of the cheapest and widely available sand in lfs

I got the Sudo sand from East Ocean, i've also seen it at other places like C328 and Seaview too.

I bought my white sand at Y618. They also have other types of sand. Not very expensive. I have successfully grown plants with sand alone and you need to have minimum thickness to allow the plants to root properly like other form of substrates. Please note that I have many fishes and they served as fertiliser for my plants' need too.

However, not sure if it is beautiful or ugly, the sand will turn green with algae. It became green looking sand eventually. I personally find them quite pretty in green. If you stir the sand, it will revert to its original white color again and will turn green after some times. Briefly, it won't always remain white under water.

Try not to use sand, its quite messy and can see dirt after awhile. I been using gex soil for low tech tank with moss and ferns for a long time, all rootless plants. works very well and minimal dosing of just comprehensive fert.
