Beware of Odyssea CFS 500 Canister Filters

I purchased the Odyssea cfs 500 from a well known online auction through the "Buy it Now" for $53.00.
I had nothing but problems with it. It has a bad tendency to leak around the lid, and to keep it from leaking you have to tighten down the thumb screws to prevent the leakage. The lid started getting stress cracks in it and finally the lid cracked enough it started leaking more abruptly. The filter is actually a great filter just the design has it flaws, especially the materials it is made from, It does a great job at moving the water it is supposed to pump 500 gph, that is without filter media of coarse. But it does a swell job until the leaking starts, and it will right away. I have researched the filter and there have been loads of people having the same problems I had. I deep sixed the filter and bought 2 HOB filters. I am just tired of the hassle with these canisters.

At that price not very far from buying alternate brands locally that are stronger.

well, my personal view about canister is that, never save money on them and always get the biggest canister that is within your budget and of course that suits your tanks. Canister operates on the principle of syphon (water is syphoned from higher water level to lower) so when a leak happens, depending on how deep your intake pipe is, it's going to drain pretty much water out of it. So always put the buck on reliable ones

Man you know it, for now on I won't try to save a buck, I was working on a tight budget when I got the CFS 500. And it ended putting me in a bind having to buy a filter when I wasn't prepared for it. Money has been pretty tight here in the States due to our screwball president.

I have been in similar situation. Bought something while on a tight budget ended up spending more trying to fix it and eventually buying a proper one.. and not to mention the sleepless nights worrying about flooding hahaha.

It's a good experience. Through this short episode you understand how canister works... overtightening parts on canister will cause them to crack
