Haha yah, totally wasn't expecting any berried mama yet as the store bought adults all died, so the fire reds in the tank are all at 2.5 months old only.

Hi guys, would an eheim 2071 be an overkill for my 36cm(~20L) tank? It will be connected to a chiller.
As it has a max flowrate of 950L/hr, I'm just worried that it would create a tornado in the tank.

Forgot to mention: I will be setting the output valve to slightly below half. Would that also help?

It should help. My hang on filter also has a rate of 900L/HR and I turn it down to prevent any tornadoes from happening. My tank is 26L.

Edit: Grats on your berried shrimp!

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

I just set up a 2073 on my 2ft tank(60x30x36, 64 litres), it became a washing machine so i connected it to a smaller hose lily pipe and connected another ecco pro 300(without power) which is an advise from a friendly bro.

I finally managed to keep my shrimps from flying.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

Update (Story time)- The tank has been shifted back home, haha long story below.

Luckily it was just a 36cm tank, so the shrimps were caught, water drained out, wood taken out, all these were done within the hour.
On Friday night, started to set-up the filter with Biohome filter media and etc. Decided to take out the moss on the driftwood to re-tie them as there was hair algae growing inbetween the clumps. Finished those at 11ish at night

Filled up the filter, connected everything. On the switches... and.... cannot work!!! Spent an hour checking the filter plus numerous on and offing the switch. Gave up at 1ish am, plug back the internal filter and decided to sos the friend who bought the filter for me. Hahaha.

Next morning received a video link on the set-up of the filter. Hahaha realise that I did not push that button on the cover to push out the air so that the water can be sucked it. Well, to my defense, the button was so tight that I didnt know it can be pushed. Once that was done, viola~ filter and chiller was working smoothly.

Room temperature is at 31-32dc (yes, my house is a sauna), the chiller took about 3.5 hours to bring it down to 26dc and another 1.5 hours to 25dc for about 30L of water (Tank + Filter). I decided to set it to kick in at 27dc and kick out at 26dc. From yesterday's observation, it takes about 30-40mins for the temperature to creep up from 26dc to 27dc, the chiller takes about 20mins to bring it back down to 26dc. The chiller is a mini chiller, not the tem brand.

    Pictures in next post.

    continuation.. :3

    21.jpeg
Last picture of tank in the office. Moss on tree totally went astray. Going to take it all off. Tied it wrongly at the intial phase, its weeping moss but.. as you can see.. its growing upwards instead...

    22.jpeg
Just after the new set-up at home was completed. Once the new external filter worked, it immediately caused the water to turn brown. Did a search on AQ and found out that it was because the beneficial bacteria dropped but this would clear up after a day. 1 crs died due to the sudden change. At this point, i started to dose half a spoon of BT-9, few drops of mineral plus and a pinch of Bee3 Max. After that, the shrimps seem to settle down better. The old internal filter is still running together with the new external filter at this point, as advised by UA bro.

    another continuation...

Well, the next morning, the water is crystal clear. Another 1 crs died at this point. Added another pinch of BT-9 and then just left the tank alone.

The internal filter was taken out last night, after it has been running for Saturday and Sunday.

    26.jpeg
And this is the tank after 2 days of running with the new external filter and chiller

I packed everything home for the move but forgot one of the most important things. Totally forgot to bring the shrimp food home hahaha, my shrimps were not fed since Thursday

And that is all of the story, hahaha. Hopefully the tank will settle down soon and the shrimps looks A-OK at the moment.
    Thanks to all!

That's mini fissiden tied onto wire mesh. The gravel covers the front slightly so the wire mesh is not very clearly shown in the picture.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

    I need advise

A couple of days after the change of filter, my PH and KH suddenly increased. I have not added any new things into my tank since the set-up.

    Old Water Parameters
    PH - 6.5
    GH - 4
    KH - 1
    Ammonia - 0
    N02 and NO3 - 0

    New Water Parameters
    PH - 7.5
    GH - 4
KH - 4 last week, now is at 3 (It has dropped to 3 after 3 times of waters changes. Water change of 2 cups only each time.)
All others remain the same at 0.

I've tried to use the benibachi blackcontrol solution which said that it can help to bring the PH down to 6-6.5. I've done 2 applications but its not working at all. My PH has still been at 7.5 since last week.

Should I continue doing the small water changes every alternate day?
Any suggestions on what else I should do? Or what else I should test for?

What is your new filter configuration and what bio-media/sponges did you put in it?

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

The media contents of your new filter look okay, doesn't seem to be any pH increasing items in there... i guess maybe when you changed to the new filter and media, the old media with all the dirt and organic waste was cleaned out of the system, so less bacteria activity and hence less pH lowering effects.

Are you using alot of the mineral rocks? Those could also slightly raise pH depending on the ratio of the amount of mineral rocks used vs the tank volume.

Though by right the current active soil substrate you are using should still be working to buffer the pH and kH lower too. I see from the first post that you are using BorneoWild Shrimp Soil and the tank was only started in March so its only 3-4 months ago, i'd assume such soil substrates normally wouldn't lose their buffering ability so quickly (though that could be a possibility).

I haven't used that particular shimp soil before though, so can't advise much on it. Maybe others who used it can share their experiences.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

My initial thought was that the soil had lost its buffering ability too.
But I have been using distilled water for the filling of the tank and water changes. The soil shouldn't even have worked that much to have lost its buffering ability that fast...

My last hope is to use sera peat to lower the ph and kh. There goes my super clear tank water if I have to use the peat.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

    Another update.

Due to various factors, I did a total rescape of the tank.
Took out almost everything in the tank and kept only the Crypt Parva.

    32.JPG
    Current Tank

For Fauna, the A/S grade CRS was given away.
Replaced with PRL Mugen-Ebi SS/SSS and Yellow Golden Back Shrimps. Plus some Brigittae Merah for pest control.

    33.JPG

Plants: Petit Nane, Brownie Blue Initial, Lamadau Green and Catherine Malawi.

I'm much more happier with this scape then my last one
Currently waiting patiently for PRL mamas to give birth hahaha.
