    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

    Fauna is in

    Last Wed, 26th March

Added in 2 Boraras Merah and 1 Boraras Brigittae, 1 horned nerite snail and 5 Fire Red Shrimps (with 1 being a mama!).
Acclimated the fishes for about 3 hours, the shrimps for 4-8hours, with the first commando in after 4hours and the mama being the last after 8hours.

    13.jpeg
First Day - manage to get a pic where most of them are together

Hello there, your not camera shy

    14.jpeg
Mama just after an hours of being put in. Seems to be cleaning her eggs.

Sadly, I lost one Boraras Merah on the third day, I think he must have injured himself on some place or had a fight with the 2 others, there seems to be an injury on his mouth.

    Today, 31 March

All remaining shrimps and fishes seem to be doing well
Saw 2 baby intruder snails, caught and threw them away!!

    15.jpeg

    16.jpeg
Someone molted Have a feeling that there is more then enough food for them, got to take out the wafer after an hour since they dont seem to be that hungry.

It was really fun setting up the tank haha.
And my salvinia natans is populating so fast haha.
Thanks all who have taken the time to take a look

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

I have 2 mysteries now, 1 has been solved, but the other is still

For the 1st one that has been solved!
The past few days, only 4 shrimps have been out grazing about, and 1 has been hiding under the coconut shell. When suddenly at yesterday's feeding, all 5 gathered. So when I took a closer look, this is what I found

    17 (2).jpeg

    18 (2).jpeg
Haha, so tiny little ones, they're about 2mm long.

    Mystery 2 - unsolved
Ok, so I have 2 Boraras, this morning when I came to work, there was no sight of them at all. I've looked everywhere, behind the filter, under the filter, flipped up the coconut husk.. The 2 are nowhere to be found, not even their corpses are found.
the only thing that I've not done is to flip up the 3 meshes... but that would disturb the gravel and all the baby shrimps hiding under it... not something I want to do.

Any ideas anyone? Or should I just leave it be?

Its good to see new life!

fish gone missing is a common sight, even for my tank. i normally leave it.. if after a week i still don't see them, i will issue them a death certificate..

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

@Eric - Well, I kinda already issued the death certificate... totally no sign of them the fishes at all

@Starlett - Hmm, my tank has a cover on it, so that is not a possibility

Last Thursday, I went to get another 6 more fishes to put in. On Friday, 1 went missing again and I thought nevermind, maybe its really hiding somewhere. So after the weekend today, I cam back to office and saw only 1 fish remaining... again no bodies are found...

Where are my fishes??!! Did I somehow bought fish catching/eating shrimps instead
I think I'm going to stop buying fishes if this goes on.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

Check your filter again. If it's passed on, then it could be trapped in the filter media.

If it is dead, then I suppose you should stop buying fish and think about what is killing them.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

Check your filter? From what I see there shouldn't be any major hiding place for your fishes.

It could also be when the fish died, the shrimps devoured the entire body. However that is unlikely as you have only a few and not an army.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

The last remaining fish as of yesterday is now also declared missing. In total 8 fishes have been gone missing. I have a total of 6 adult shrimps in tank.

Ok, just took out the filter to check. The bottom has been stuffed with sponge since set-up, so I couldnt see that the fishes have been sucked in.
Flipped up the coconut husk again and no bodies found.

I am seriously considering getting 2-3 more fishes and setting up a camera just to see what is happening...

@Felix_fx2 - Nymph, not any that I can see. If there was, I would think I would see the baby shrimps disappearing? Instead, I am seeing many more of the babies now as they are much bigger and are not afraid to be grazing out in the open.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

Your lights is on a timer right? Does your light shut off immediately or flickers? When it turns on or off, is it at dawn or dusk? As in the room that the aquarium is at.. Is it dark when the lights turn on or off? There is a chance that the fish dashed out of the water in reaction to sudden loss or influx of light. Check the surroundings. Smell. 6 dead fish could smell quite a bit. If you have a robo vacuum, check the robo vacuum.

If the shrimplet your able to do headcount then you can rule that out.

Normally the usual suspects only that few. Getting filtered, flying fish or getting Hunted.

Yes, light is on timer. Turns on at 8.45am and the light goes out immediately at 5.30pm. But the office lights are still on, the tank is not suddenly plunged into total darkness.

I have a cover on the top of the tank. Pic below, sorry it might not be very clear.

    19.jpeg

@Whitechicks7 - Thank you Hopefully, the moss will grow well on it and cover it nicely.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

That is quite a mystery! No way 6 fishes could have gone missing like that.

Only thing I could have thought up is that your shrimps cleared their bodies very very efficiently.

Just to put the thought out here, could house geckos (common lizards) have eaten the fishes? I have heard some rumors from office friends that they have geckos sneaking under the lid and grabbing the unsuspecting fish that comes near to the surface.

    Re: Another Poisoned Novice

As long as the cover is not completely covered, still have small gaps on the sides, small fishes like boraras can still jump out (actually the corners and sides are usually where they jump out). Though having all the fishes jumping out is very rare, usually only at most 1 or 2.

I think the fishes just somehow died and the shrimps ate them up (probably only left some bits hidden amongst the plants), boraras are very tiny so it doesn't take much time for them to be consumed by hungry shrimps and shrimplets. Quite strange that boraras would be dying though, they are usually very hardy fishes, its normally the shrimps that will die off first if anything goes wrong in the tank.
