I prefer to set the duration of lighting to be one continuous stretch of about 10 hours without any break in between. And lights off by about 10pm so I can enjoy the tank.
No break in between because I don't want to disrupt the photosynthesizing process once it starts.
Not starting to turn on at night till next morning because I don't want to stress the fish and plants which I believe has evolved to have a day-night rhythm like us.

Guys, Take a look at the suggested technique from Dennerle...
http://www.dennerle.de/ENGLISCH/E_Al...enframeset.htm
I put it on at about 9.30am which won't disturb my sleep even on a weekend. And stop at about 2.30pm to depict an afternoon storm. Then start again at 4.30pm till about 9.30pm. This gives me about 10hrs of illumination each day.
Also this gives me a chance to look my tank in its full glory when I come back home from work.
Hope the article above helps and my testimony works for you.
my 3ft tank with PL lighting also incorporate a siesta period in between the lighting periods. so far so good and no major algae outbreak (touch wood)
how about lighting periods for MH lights? anyone can share?
Cheers,
Melvin Lim
