Hi All, I have seen a recent interest in having moss carpet. So allow me to share my experience in building one. Moss carpet forms rather quickly under CO2 injection tanks. so it is a good alternative to carpeting plants. but i must admit it does lack the "Wow" effect.

    Items needed:

The plastic mesh and fishing line is bought from daiso. No toxic chemical leeching from the mesh as i have been using from at least 6 mths or so.

Cut the mesh to the size you require and tie the moss to the mesh using fishing line, if you prefer, cotton thread can also be use. After which you can anchor down the mesh to the soil, using the green plastic coated metal wires, (easy twisties bought from mustafa), don't have to worry about the ugly green, the moss will devour it in no time, like so:

after some time, they will grow to this:

    End product:

Sorry for the algae infested photos, i will be posting my algae combat experiment thread soon.

Forget to add. 1 more benefit, good for fish fries. I will take one piece out from the main tank to the fish nursery to let the fries feed on the infusoria. i will swap it from time to time.

Re: Moss carpet:- Show and tell

    Benny, thanks for sharing..

If fish only tank maybe its ok...but If you keep shrimp, I think the (green twisties) is not an good idea... tie using sewing string or cable ties is safer as the metal in the (green twisties) may rust and leak into the water. One of the uncles I know got a bad experience with his (black twisties) ...shrimp population reduced by a lot ...

    Well just sharing...

Check out my Blog on planted tank, good for newbies ( i am lazy to retype all the info i know, so please click and read below link... i hope you don't fall asleep while reading)

Wong, thanks for the highlight, I should put it as a disclaimer. Haha. So far, I have been using this method for quite sometime around a year plus minimum. But my water change regime is once weekly.

    Hi Bennyc..

Love that effect you got there! Been wantg to achieve tat but moss kept 'melting' (non c02 setup).

What abt glueing them? Have u had any experience with 'safe-type' super glues before? Read sumwhere pple are actually using it.. Simply by glueing the moss directly onto their driftwood.

    Any advice on this?

Re: Moss carpet:- Show and tell

It is possible to glue it. But I strongly not recommend it. The fronds that are coated with glue will die and under water a mess glue job will turn the whole thing white. A neat one will still have some hint of white from the glue.

Moss is very difficult to kill. The melting should be it transiting to submerse grow. However, I have moss in non co2 tanks and co2 tanks. Both are doing alright, no melting during transition, it just affects the growth rate.

@bennyc, use cloth string or finishing string will be better. The rust will not quickly affect, but later on after couple of months.

Glue only can use gel based ones, more neater but not commonly recommended for use on mesh..

Re: Moss carpet:- Show and tell

Hmm.. So what you are saying is that Gel-based glue is OK to be applied directly for moss onto driftwood?

Need second opinion on this before getting a S$2 Daiso Gel-based glue recommended by another forumer..

Re: Moss carpet:- Show and tell

Hi all, it seems like everyone is reading something wrongly. The twistes are use to anchor like the 2nd picture. Cotton thread or fishing line is use to tie the moss to the thread.

As I also mention the twisties are in the tank for a very long time, it is close to a year. At the very least. But then it is just me so take it with a pinch of salt everyone.

I think people over think tying too much. After once or twice, it becomes very fast and neat.
