So this week my crs starting dying, like 3 a day. I've been keeping them for over a month now and suddenly this week all the deaths start coming in. I changed 20% of the water to distilled water and after that they started to molt. Every time I seem some shells, I also see a died shrimp. My ammonia:0 nitrite:0 nitrate 5 Ph:6.4 GH: 4 KH : 1. The ones that has not molt are eating some are hiding though, I even have berried females. Anyone experiencing the same thing or have any idea what is happening?

Temperature of the water? Anyone spray perfume, hairspary, insecticide nearby your tank?

A lot of variable might cause death...shrimps are very sensitive creatures

Check out my Blog on planted tank, good for newbies ( i am lazy to retype all the info i know, so please click and read below link... i hope you don't fall asleep while reading)

I'm not sure if I'm right, the temp flactuates 5 degrees seems too much. i assume u use fan in day and a/c at night?
meaning when you leave home everyday, the temp rises from 23 to 27, then when you are back, it drops back from 27 to 23. will this be too overwhelming?

i know for crs the temp must be really stable, mine flactuates between 26.3-28.3 and i'm already getting heart attacks. haha

but now i changed my fan to a better one, the temp stays below 28.

but like wongce said, it could be other factors as well.

    hopefully is nothing serious!

    Re: CRS dying:(

As others said there might be the temperature. Since there is nothing wrong with other parameters, I would suggest dont change anything, dont do large water change. Sometimes it's due to the shrimps themselves have been damaged during initial purchase. After a month or more, it's time for them to molt, those weak one will die. So try to keep everything stable and hope for the babies

The first 3 weeks were great, they got berried, ate a lot and were very active. Suddenly this week everything turned upside down, I didn't even do anything to the water

    Re: CRS dying:(

It may be the temperature spike during the past days where the mid day temp soar to 34 degree Celsius.

If you are using fan only, I'm sure that affect your tank's temperature too.

    Re: CRS dying:(

Sometimes, we need to explore all possible reasons why our shrimps are dying. Everything may be possible.
For instance, my blue and yellow cherry shrimps logically should be more hardy than my crs. However, most of my them died and crs are doing well. This is definitely unbelievable, but I still decided to move them to a smaller nano tank, no fan, and they are doing better than with crs.
Crs are pretty hardy actually. They won't die off easily if our tanks are not perfect, but they will still die off one by one eventually when they cant take it anymore in conditions not suited for them.
Sometimes, we need to trial and error to find the nearest best conditions for our shrimps, as every tank is different.
If you only have a small number of them dying, then don't worry too much first. Its quite natural to find 1 or 2 shrimps dying sometimes. if all dying everyday or every other day, then u might wana consider that maybe it's really some reasons that caused it that you find it not possible.
You'll have to trial and error until the situation is better.
Try doing a 20% water change (with aged water, this is important), and maybe shop for some mineral or old sea mud rocks to improve water condition.
If u don't mind the trouble, u can also trial and error with temp. Since its not feasible to on ac whole day, maybe move your tank to a cooler place in your house, and run fan 24/7.
Explore all possible ways to see whats the problem.
Shrimps are just more of a hassle than fishes!

    Re: CRS dying:(

Sorry just to add the 20% water change just so it for this time, with aged water, not distilled. People use distilled mainly for top ups only I believe? For normal maintenance of my crs, I do 5% water change twice a week only, because my tank is smaller than 2 feet, the water parameters may go crazy if I change waters. For bigger tanks, 20% is pretty ideal.

    Re: CRS dying:(

I know lfs takes in fishes, but shrimps I'm not sure cos since they are sensitive species. U can try asking, but meanwhile, if they are still with you, perhaps try abit of water change first and adding in mineral stones or old sea mud rock.
You might want to post your a picture of your tank, see any veterans here can identify something that shouldn't be in your tank.

Hey Arron I wouldn't mind keeping your prl till you get your stuff settled. I have a shrimp breeding box which is currently empty, if your interested you can drop it off.
