Yes it will spread outwards, which depends on the light too
The fissidens will eventually slowly propagate outwards to cover the rest of the rock, but it can take a long time (could be months and sometimes even years, depending on the initial amount of fissidens and your tank conditions). In the meantime, you'll just be staring at lots of bare surfaces.
It'll be better to spread out the fissidens and tie them in a thin layer evenly across the rock surface from the start, that way it will at least look more "filled in" with balanced coverage while it's growing.
