Ideal fish population for a 2ft planted tank

    Hi my fellow forumers,
May I know what is the ideal population size of small fishes (e.g. tetra, rummy nose, tiger barb and rcs) for my moderately planted 2ft tank. Currently I have 8 tetra, 4 rummy nose, 2 tiger barb and some cherry shrimps. I want to buy a few more small fishes but not sure if it will be overly crowded for my 2ft tank or not.

    Your advice is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Does it mean I can keep 50 small fishes e.g. tetra, rummy nose?

    thanks

The tank size is not the only determine factor for number of fishes. Your filtration system is too. If your filtration is good, you can even add in 100 small tetra's with no problem.

I have one Otto but it loves to stick on the leaves, drift wood or glass more than swimming slowly at the bottom for some visual effects haha

Re: Ideal fish population for a 2ft planted tank

Your current bio-load seems okay for the tank... maybe add 2-3 more otos (they like company and will school in larger groups) and more shrimps to help in algae management.

Btw, boraras brigittae are way smaller in body mass and bioload (than compared to tetras, rummy nose and tiger barbs), almost less bio-load than shrimps... that's why they can be stocked at much higher quantities in an equivalent tank size.

    Thanks bro Urban.
Btw, any bro here got experience in feeding cory? Do I really need special food e.g. bloodworm, beefheart for them? Or can I jst feed them with the same food that I feed my tetra? Thanks

The cherry shrimp will eventually get picked off by the barbs and tetra.

You still haven't told us about your filter.

Kuhli Loach are my favourite bottom dwellers. They are rather timid so a group will do better.

    Hi Bryan,
Oops so sorry I forgot about the question on filter. Im using a built in internal filter that is pre installed in my Juwel tank. I think they call it Juwel bioflow 3.0.

I read the review and learnt that it is a decent filter but the flow rate is not as good as external one like Eheim.

The dwarf cory species (ie. habrosus, hastatus, pygmaeus etc) mostly eat what you feed the other fishes too, but unless there is sufficient food that sinks to the bottom they'll tend to miss out... so maybe you can get fast sinking food like Hikari Sinking Wafers (which are designed for bottom feeders, there is a photo of corydoras on the packet), that will allow them to get some food.

Otocinclus, Corydoras Pygmaeus and Habrosus, it's very awesome to see the oto sometimes trying to shoal with the corys.

Re: Ideal fish population for a 2ft planted tank

I used to have 12 Pygmy Cory, 100 Mosquito Rasbora and countless shrimps in a 2ft tank.
Pygmy cory do swims in school, but not mosquito rasbora which I thought rather disappointing.

Filter system very very important if you plan to keep so many fishes.
