    Re: any crayfish breeder here?

    Hi there,
First and foremost, Crayfish molt to get bigger so you need some sort of "cave" for them to hide and molt when they need to. Secondly, they need oxygen so either get a airpump or have a platform where they can surface to breathe. Thirdly, they are great escape artist. Try not to have any support where they can climb out of the tank or simply keep the tank covered. Fourth, they like to catch fish and eat. They ate my feeder toman, all of them! but they failed to catch the other small fishes. They like to eat plants and their roots. Young crayfish would be active in the day but as they grow older they became active at night. A good diet with lots of calcium would help in their molt. Molting is probably the most likely way they will die, other crayfish like to attack and eat them when they molt. That is it for starters, when you encounter more problem you can ask us.

Awesome!!, i have a question, how do you keep them together so close without them tearing up each other? My 2 crayfish always fight.

Easy! You must have N+1 cray fish (N=desired number). Then u watch them carefully, the 1st one that initiates a fight, u tear it apart in front of the rest and make an example. Afterthat, with N crayfish left, they will not dare to fight, hihihi...

Jokes aside, how big is your crayfish and how big is ur tank?

2 X 8 cm crayfish in a 2 feet tank. By the way, how do you solve the problem of cannibalism when they molt?

    Re: any crayfish breeder here?

ok, I am not expert in this, i only started keeping crayfish for less than a month.

About the fighting, what i observe is that they will fight till tired, then they stop (approx 1 day). I have 1.5ft tank and keep 8, some big some small, the biggest is 14cm and smallest is 6cm. To solve the fighting problem, I give them some hiding place, and i give them something to do. I have a big drift wood and a plastic shelf inside the tank. Sometimes they still fight, but its only like play play lah. Not serious one.

Molting problem, i still have not encountered yet so i really do not know. But i guess i just keep them well fed then they won't cannibalised.

Hey, what you feed you cray fish? I tried all kinds of dried food and so far still live catfish works well.

How about sending your crayfish for obedient course! Put your in my tank for 2 days...

    Hi mikisol,
I feed them Hikari crab cuisine stick as the main diet. Then i supplement it with tubifex worm, snails and frozen brineshrimp. You can try feeding them feeder snakehead, they like that as well. I cannot feed those live food as i have other small fishes / shrimps in the tank as well.

Today, i hear the small guy singing...."Like a Rhinestone cowboy...."

By the way, it is good to add a pinch of salt into the crayfish tank, makes them more alive and hungry.

    Re: any crayfish breeder here?

I have some crayfish eggs that fall off the mother when transportation. I pick them up and throw into my baby danoi tank and its been a week now. Detached from their mum, apparently it still "grows". Will it eventually hatch?

    Re: any crayfish breeder here?

Crayfish is easy to breed. I never bought mine. I catch them at Kranji freshwater reservior. Same species as bro mikisol's

I use PVC tubes for them to hide. Driftwood to climb for air. Used HOF in a 2ft tank.
Water is only filled 2/8 of the tank.
When they're mating. Female would be on the bottom with legs up and male will lay on top of her. When male release sperm. Expect a cloud of water.

Only had 1 batch. Enough for me.
You have to be prepared for scoop them up slowly when they are released from the female's swimmerets.
As either they will get stuck on the filter or cannibal by their siblings.

But all in all. Only ONE baby stands firm. The rest died. Not sure due to what. Managed to grew to about 4cm claw to tail. Then decided to abandon the hobby. Return back to Kranji Reservoir.

The molting process is very interesting to watch. But take precautions not to spook it as they will get stress.
I collect their old shell time to time to compare the growth but try not to take ALL of the molted shells. They need some for the calcium to further harden up their exo skeleton.

Anyway. This happened 2 years back. I will try to find the pictures if i could.

    Sorry to add on. *Edited*

When the mating the completed. You will see the female's tail curled up for a few days. That signals that the egg are in the process of "Incubating". After the female opened up the tail. Its very beautiful. She will keep fanning the swimmerets to supply oxygen to them. Very fun and interesting. Have fun!

Hey, thanks for sharing. My question, if u can answer, if the eggs gets detached from the mother, will it still hatch?

I don't have experience from that. But no harm trying to save that little guy. Firstly. Have to make sure its fertilised. I not sure how to check for that. Skip. Next. Supply it with moving current and *sufficient* air. Some moss for it to hang on to like how it hanged on its mom till its ready to leave the swimmerets.

I think it will be difficult. Because very hard to make sure the egg stays still while having moving current. Or you can get some java moss. Wrap it loosely just to make sure it doesn't roll around bumping here and there. Moss would be adequate i guess. Because wrapping it,After it hatches. Maybe they got nature instinct to cling on to something or maybe call the moss mom. lol

I tried to do some research. Possibility is that the egg isn't fertilised or the momma is stress thus dropping all her eggs.
