Does this mean that you will have another form of substrate beneath your lapis? If it is done this way, can we still grow less-demanding "rooted" plants on the substrate, say Java fern & marsilea hirsuta?

i believe Java Ferns (in general) do best when rhizomes are above substrate level.
i cannot comment on marsilea.h as i've no free sample to start haha...

    another form of substrate
You mean potting soil? or ada? do strongly note that there is a pond mix for soil (advaliable from plant nursery like far east flora)

Give you an example of someone using it (guess who)

Yup, the same idea applies to nanas too. Was thinking of burying my java ferns' roots into the bottom-most substrate (the red packet GEX shrimp & plant soil, which should belong to "nutrient-capable" substrate) but only deep(or shallow, depending on how you view it) enough so that I can rest their rhizomes on top of a second layer of "inert" substrate.

Al right, will experiment with the marsilea plant on my own.

I'm referring to substrate with nutrients "in general". When you mentioned "top-coat", I have the impression you have another layer of substrate beneath, but I do not know which type you use (beneath). AM interested to know.

May I know what's the pond mix for? Is it to enable plant growth relying solely on substrate (without dosing liquid fertilizer) when using a pure "inert" substrate?

You mean an example of someone using the pond mix? I'm sorry, I'm unable to grasp what the photo is supposed to show? Mind pointing it out to me? Thank you.

FYI the thread for the tank is below. it will answer most of your questions.
I actually don't like many quote tags with many questions. 1 or 2 is fine.. as most of the time i am browsing/replying/searching fourm for the links on mobile..

My bad; it's an old habit of mine, i.e. I do not like to "artificially" increase post counts by only replying to one point per post. I'll try to be more considerate for users browsing on their mobile devices.

Update on the tank: My nerite snails started to lay eggs all over the tank, leaving a mass of eggs on the lava rock. There's no chance for them to survive in freshwater state right?

They don't hatch in aquarium environment. A bit unsightly so I will normally scrape them off using an old credit card.

That is why it is not only unsightly but annoying.

    photo-1.jpg

Any suggestions to improve this setup of mine, like what kind of plants can I add in the foreground and background.
    Its running on a Eheim 2215 and 4x24W T5.
I feel that the output of the filter is rather strong for my slow swimming tetras, been thinking of switching it to lilypipe but don't know if it will ease the currents.

i like your scape! its simple and nice!
you may want to add a white or black oyama paper at the back to cover the tubings at the back
for foreground maybe u can try glosso ? for the back maybe some stem plants?

Thanks! After considerations,I think I would stick to a clear background to make it more aesthetic.
Is glosso easy to maintain?Cause 3/4 of my time is spent in camp and I am not quite into the idea of injecting CO2 at this point of time as yet.
And currently I'm keeping some corydoras and tetras,is it safe to add in shrimps like cherry?
