The feeding ring was stuffed with black coarse sponge to break the water from the resun HOF since it does not have the thing like the GEX hof had. Had dark substrate on hand but been procrastinating for the past few weeks

i was wondering about bacterial boom. i've read that i should just ignore it and let the BB colonize right? is there anything else i should do? other than increasing aeration

    Low tech tank FTW!

hehe, the cloudy water should be due to the sand or a bacteria boom. most likely the sand. it was used so i thought it's "washed" haha. well will keep up with water change.

most likely is green BBA. but it looks really nice so im not bothered by it. and its only covering the wood. its not really affecting the plants or glass. its fairly easy to remove as well haha.

I was wondering how you managed to grow those BBA? From far looks like marimo ball torn apart and tied to the wood. Looks nice haha

SeVenZ, the plant you bought back in December last year was probably Dieffenbachia sp., aka Dumbcane. A common house plant. They will leach out toxic sap that can poison even human beings if you break their stem.

I have the same kind of "green BBA" in my tank, but in my case, they grow in patches randomly all over the place. Most of the time I find them attached to individual grains of GEX soil.

Re: Low-tech (non-CO2) tanks post your pics!

    Hi,

This is my simple Low Tech (non Co2) planted tank. Previous scape was damaged when my underwater pump drop to the bottom of the substrate and turn the whole tank into a milky amazon haha. I thus have no choice but to rescape the tank and added top layer of C3 sand to hold the substrate. Saved some of my plant and replanted them here.

    Tank : 2 feet
    Light : T5, 2 x 25watt (I think), daily 8 hours (break into 2x 4 hrs with 1 hrs break in between)
    Fan : 1 cooling fan
    Filter : top filter
fishes : 14 neon tetra, 10 orange tetra (don't know the real name), 3 puffer fishes, 3 yamato shrimp, 4 guppies, 4 other fishes
Plant : 3 types with glosso on the foreground (just started, previous HC all melted)

    New set up:

    - Gex 1.5 ft slim tank
    - LED lights
    - Gex OHF (M)
    - Borneo Wild Shrimp soil
    - Assorted plants (Mini Taiwan Moss on wood), windelov and unknown star plant in mid ground
    - Plan to keep sakura shrimps as no chiller planned
    - Water parameters unknown as not tested
    - temperature 28 to 29 C
    - One Assassin snail in tank to hopefully remove all the unwanted snails before main occupants Sakura Shrimps come in

Sorry for low quality photo. All comments welcome ....Thank you !

NO it will suffocate your plants. You need to decrease light period. Something like having them on 3hr/ off 2hrs/ on 3hrs should help. It helped me get the problem under control. You also need to inject Co2 Alternative. Here in the USA we use Seachem Excel. Alternative to Excel is, Cidex 2% Glut matched to excel is dilluted 3:1 solution

Lack of aeration is 1 cause of algae. So make certain filter is not gunked up. Could just do water changes weekly instead.
