I prefer the #1, in the #2 pix, the driftwood in the middle looks rather out of place

Simon, you mean the branch like DW in the #2 pix? The DW right at the front glass is only temporary

no, not the one at the front, referring to the tree sump-like dw.. i think u should shift it to either corner, use it to hide your filter or something else

Thanks thanks I also think so but the crypts have stabilised nicely after 3 months and shifting them will make them melt again. I will see if the mini pellia can cover the stump and make it look less obtrusive

nice tank. I think adding some reddish or brownish crypts will make it look nicer.

I am not sure about crypts being in shrimp tanks, because my friends crs got wiped out because he placed a shroud of it inside.
Some of the low tech tanks are pretty nice. I am comtemplating whether I should go hi or low tech with a 2.5ftcube tank. The cost difference will be about another $100(co2) + $100(lights).
Cheers,
Andrew

amidala: Why not put moss on the substrate as well? For variety, can try Java Fern on the driftwood too?

21 L planted tank (newbie 1st attempt)

Hi All
This is my first attempt at setting up an aquarium. Trying to setup a low tech planted tank. Starting really small as i have no prior experience in setting up any aquarium of any kind. Kind of just experimenting to learn before deciding on investing in a much bigger tank and equipments...etc

Tank size: 50cm x 16cm x 25cm (height) 21Liters
Lights: 9w
Internal filter: 5w

Pic of day one

Any comments/help would be much appreciated.

1. read in many threads that the tank should be heavily planted before adding fishes. do you think my setup is ok? (i know it is nothing compare to many tanks out there :>)

2. guys at the shop told me that without co2, it is not possible to grow moss (taiwan or java) and riccia. Got some anyway ... just to try out how they do in a low tech tank. Any advise on how to increase the chances of the taiwan moss and riccia surviving in my low tech tank

Thanks a million

I have these same plants growing in tanks withot CO2 or filtration too. Sufficient lighting plus some fish in the tank to provide the nutrients will do.

Injected CO2 is needed with higher lighting. It makes plants grow faster.

Looks like there's no base fertiliser or soil in the substrate? Then for the plants you inserted in the substrate, you should insert some fertiliser (eg. root monsters) there for better rooting. A new tank has poor nutrients in the gravel unless you have base fertiliser.

Hi Juggler
thanks for the pointer

I did put some fertilizer sticks in the substrate. For riccia they do not root right? so fertilizer does not make a diff to this plant right?
