Can the barbel of a cory grow back if it is eroded ? What is the use of the barbel and how long does it take to grow back (if it can grow back) ? Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for the replies. But how long is 'awfully long time' ?
And will the new barbels be shorter than the old ones ?
    Thanks in advance.

Two of the more common factors contributing to barbel shortening are nitrates and sharp-edged substrate. So to rid the problem once and for all, we need to nip the bud.

Apart from sourcing for food, barbels on corydoras are also said to be important for communication and sex. I would suppose that in the former, barbels on cories function like feelers on roaches. In the latter, a female cory uses her barbels to grab hold of the ventral fins on the male during the so-called "T-position".
