Hi KimKeat,

Hi, I set up a planted tank with some cherry shrimps about one month ago. One female has been pregnant for about two weeks. The eggs are yellow and I could see a few little eyes today.
Yesterday, I noticed another one carried some eggs too but they are BLACK! From what I read, the eggs are usually yellow but can be green too. But is it normal to have black eggs? Need your advice please. Thanks.

I am balding but i am still young!
Thanks Eric. Will observe and see what happens.
The eggs are more dark green now.
That's good to hear I suppose?

Ya, hope the eggs are okay. The yellow eggs of the other shrimp were all gone last night!!! I searched and searched and searched last night and this morning but could not even find a single baby shrimp. Are they too small to be seen or are they so good in hiding in the moss?? Hope the mummy shrimp did not drop the eggs. I could already see some little eggs in the eggs two nights ago. Does anyone know how long do the baby shrimps hatch after the little eyes are visible? Thanks.
If you can spot eyes inside the eggs, then it should be a matter of days before they hatch.
Usually the newly born shrimplets will hide for the first week (unless your tank is bare or really focus on finding them) and you'll tend to only notice them when they grow abit bigger and start wondering around.
Really hope they are playing hide and seek with me. Still could not find any so far.
If you are using canister filter, chances are many are inside it too, somehow they can still find their way in even with prefilter mesh or sponges on the intake pipe.
Nowadays i don't even bother to use prefilter guards anymore in my tanks though, i just let the shrimplets get sucked into the canister filter and grow up in there, it seems their survival rate is higher and they grow better in the canister filter then in the tank, all the ones i retrieve out during filter cleaning look super healthy with the best colors.
I guess it's abit like a refugium... no predators + lots of food to scavenge = shrimplets paradise.![]()
Are you serious?? Yes, I am using a canister filter with a sponge at the inlet. When I bought the filter, the shop owner told me that I needed to clean the filter only once a year. By then, I will have a few generations of shrimp families in there then.
A funny question. Will the shrimps be blind since they have been kept in complete darkness for weeks or months since they are born?
Well, the ones i retrieve out the the canister filters don't exhibit any sight issues when introduced back into the tank, they just continue going about their business like nothing happened.
The eheim canister filters i use are translucent, so abit of dim ambient light does still get in (even for the ones in cabinets, as there are holes for equipment where some light shines in too) and shrimp generally use their other senses more than vision (they tend to be more active in the night), so i guess the environment in a canister filter is pretty much like a perpetual night time or heavily shaded environment for them.
I think it'll probably take hundreds (or even thousands) of generations of shrimps specifically born and only raised in complete darkness to undo millions of years of evolution to breed a new species that are fully adapted to pitch dark conditions.
Just don't put any sponge or guard on the intake pipe and they will naturally find their way into the canister filter... its like they went on holiday and you wouldn't see them again until the next filter maintenance.
Though once in a while, i'll shine a flash light into the base of the canister filter to see how many shrimps are inside, quite often can spot them swimming around too.

Mine is Dolphin and it is translucent too but the two white filter media containers are opaque. Cannot really see much by shining a torch light.
Okay, will check from time to time to see whether can spot them if there is any hidden in the filter. Thanks.
I have not found any shrimplet either in the tank or in the filter. Most likely, the 1st berried shrimp dropped its eggs. Two days ago, I saw the 3rd berried shrimp. Same as the 2nd one, the eggs are dark green. Just now, I saw 3 green eggs at the bottom of the tank. Sigh, looks like one of them is dropping eggs too.
Berried mama dropping eggs could be due to stress. You might want to check the water parameters.
