    My Betta Macrostoma pair spawned!

I originally thought the male had eaten the eggs a week ago when he asked me to feed him. I fed him and stirred for fries but found none.

Then today I took out the male and put him in his original tank and was going to clean the tank when I saw a fry! I started searching for more
and found a total of 4 fries. It was his first time, so not too bad for a start. ;]

Just wanted to share with the good news.

Attached are pics of the pair and the 4 fries.

DawnDuece, from the pic yr tank setup must have met or exceeded the minimum requirements for this great specifies to hold the spawn....keep up with the great work and hope to see you have more...

would be great if you can publish your tank set up, plants, lighting and water parameters etc. so that it would help other Mac breeders to grow. I like yr green tank.

Ah I found out what the problem was. I'm only allowed 200mb of pics in the whole forum! Deleted some other stuff. =]

    Plants & Lights:
Well I bought the whole tank already fully planted, so I do not know each individual plant except for hair grass. But they are basically low maintenance plants. I just use a topup type CO2 diffuser that I manually pump each morning. The light seems like the Aquazonic T5 light x 2 bulbs which I turn on from 0700~1800 daily.

I have added many floating plants: frogbits, salvinia natans & water lettuce. They seem to do their love making under the floating plants in between the roots. If I look at them, they will stop and both face me and stare back until I leave...

    Tank & Filters:
They are housed in a 56 liter tank and I use 2 HOFs, 1 x GEX Slim Large with Biohomme and 1 x GEX Slim M equivalent(Jebo brand) with plastic noodles for media.

    Temperature:
It is also fanned daily from 0600~2300 with a Boyu FS-120. Aircon comes on from 2100~0300. Temperature seems to fluctuate from 23~28 degrees celsius.

    Water Chemistry:
Water changes are done once a week 25%, and I topup some ketapang water every now and then. So the water is usually neutral or a little below neutral. Guessing from PH5~7.

    Tank Mates:
3 ottos, 1 small albino pleco, 1 small starlight pleco, 4 gold tetras, 4 spotted rasboras. The yamato shrimps were eaten. SAE was moved to another tank as I thought their sudden movements were scaring the male.

    Feeding:
I feed meal worms mostly every other day, but trying to cut down to twice a week so that the male gets used to fasting. Sometimes I mix a bit of betta pallets and flakes when feeding the meal worms. Weekends I give blood worms and once in awhile tubifex worms.

The male always seems to initiate love making, but the female was always too shy. The ketapang water seemed to put the female in the mood though. They have spawned twice before though, but the male ate the eggs twice on the 3rd day.

The only thing I did differently this time is right after spawning, I moved the male into a 30cm tank and covered 80% of the tank in cloth with a small fan running over it.

    Hope this helps. =]

    Re: Betta Macrostoma Fries!

Great to see you have done so much to get yr Mac to spawn and successfully hold...
interestingly you didn't go for RO water and re-mineralized etc...

Let me share my 2 contrasting setups ( I wanted at first to see the required water temperature to raise / keep /spawn betta macrostoma ):
Setup A: 2 juveniles Mac raised from 4cm to now 8-9 cm in 18liter plastic tank place at balcony(only one hr direct sunlight each day, one small sponge filter added only recently)
setup B: a pair of matured Mac in 40 liter tank with Ext filter, UV, MicroChiller temp set at 24*C.
Everything is great with setup B, except 40lit tank may be too small.

What I have observed are that:
In setup A: Captive bred juve are able to survive the recent Hot weather 30*c during the day.
No filter was fine with the Juve. Partial Rain water from the down-pouring rain from time to time as the tank is on balcony.
They grown very fast- double their size in 2 months, eat almost everything from pellets, to flakes to frozen bloodworm etc. they love daphnia for sure.
They seem to like the black water created from the 2-3 full IALs and blog wood. Tank is full of Algae, green and hair algae etc. Visibility is poor so have not identify their sexes yet....

Now Question is: should they be moved to Cooler or Aircon room(bedroom), or tank setup with chiller?
Will the exiting setup at the balcony inhibited their full growth potential or put them at risk? Should gradually bring down the temperature and move them to bigger tank?
And should I look for mates for them and try to spawn them?

    All the question marks!
Any experts care to comment and advise?

    Re: Betta Macrostoma Fries!

Sorry to sound noob but what is RO water and re-mineralizing?

You must have many macs! If it is 8-9cm, isn't that already fully grown? How old are they? I heard they take over a year to reach that size.
My macs are about 10~12cm I'm guessing.

What is the UV for in your setup B?

Sounds interesting that your setup A is doing so well even with warm water and little filtration. I have heard that captive bred macs are used to higher temperatures, but I do suppose that if they show any sign of sickness, they should be moved to a cooler tank.

    Re: Betta Macrostoma Fries!

Reversed Omosis water is filtered water which uses membrane to remove particles including minerals etc.
I cannot see clearly the the black water with thick algae ...which could be the reason that they can put up with the heat. you most welcome to visit...pic attached.

i suspect I might have to move them to cooler place but no sure when as they seem to do well in current setup which was temporary but became perm...it might affect their ability to spawn I am not sure..,
