Does otto and SAE feed on plants?

I recently planted tubs of UG and even had some tied between wire meshes, however all my UG are gone within two to three days. I only see minimal floating UG in my tank, I reckon most have either been eaten or been siphon in by the fliter. I have seen the otto and SAE picking at the wire meshes which I had the UG in, thus the thought behind if they would actually be eating the UG. I used to contribute the challenges of planting UG to shrimps pulling them off, but this time I don't have any shrimps in the tank yet (the same batch of UG that I tied between meshes are in my shrimp tank is still growing in the meshes).

Any insights would be useful as I need to decide on what to plant again lol.

Your SAE is probably the one eating the plants, they can develop a taste for fine leaved plants and munch on them.

I had juvenile SAE in my tank with fissidens and observed them nibbling on the moss until all the green fronds were gone, only left the brown stalks.

That's quite an expensive taste it has developed, all 5 tubs of it. I'm planning to it up for adoption, cause not enough algae in the tank for it.

Yeah, i had rotala wallichii in the same tank too and the SAE also ate all the leaves until only left the bare stems.

I guess also not enough algae (and i tend to feed commercial pellet/wafer food only every few days) so they resort to eating plants, not sure if its the case for all SAE because some people say they haven't encountered any problems with SAE and their mosses and fine-leaved plants, so it could just be a matter of food availability... and luck.

I noticed my otos grazing on leaves which are unhealthy(melting) and look soft enough for them to eat easily

I noticed my otos eating my red wenti crypt. Maybe they thought its food for them.

Oto mouths are not designed to chew through tough healthy leaves.. most likely they are either scrubbing the soft bio-film and algae off the leaves, or some of your crypt leaves were melting and already soft, so the otos are just helping to eat the weak leaves.

My otto cleaned my lilaponsis very well, stalk by stalk. It's all green, clean and healthy now haha. I'm still very afraid to introduce UG back into the tank. Maybe I will try Eleocharis and Monte Carlo. Hopefully the SAE not interested in these.
