You are using mature filter media from your previous setup?
if so, you tank might have been cycled.
I have tried using mature media from my decom tank to do set up. I put some commando shrimps in on the 3rd day and they made it.
By the way, what soil you using?

Me? I'm not using any filter media in this new tank setup. Throw away the leaked tank one cause I got a little panick and was thinking through. Only save some of the leaked tank water and rcs.
I use ADA Aqua Soil - Amazonia New 9L (Normal Type) as stated during my purchase.
Using the old media will quickly help to cycle new tanks. Unfortunately Used water won't actually help alot with cycling tank. But anyway, if your tank with ada soil is already more than 2 weeks, should be ok hopefully. But most people will tell you that ada will need at least 4 weeks to cycle as they will release alot of ammonia.Originally Posted by Darick

Holy Shrimps. I put the ada soil in for only a few hours. Didn't recall the soil will release ammonia and a lot of it. Bummer.

Yes my friend. Ada soil releases ammonia, a lot of it and will go off the charts. I put in my plants on the second day and the plants didn't do well. Thats why cycling with ada soil, for the first week people do alot of water changes.
With cycled media, you may be able to cycle it in 1 or 2 weeks if you are lucky, but many won't take the risk.
So sad now. Can only pray for miracle that my shrimps are super hardy. Will have for 1st death before I panick. Now panick also no use liao. Dunno to laugh or not.
Now is only day 1 or 2? It's kind of risky. If you start seeing deaths, then maybe buy a cheap spare tank to put in your shrimps first.
Then get hornworts or frogbits to put in your current tank to suck up the nitrates later which will happen as your tank establishes.
Already have a Styrofoam box on standby. This is the same one I use when my previous tank leaked.
Frogbits I don't like. Hornworts I had before but the problem is planting it. it just won't stay in 1 place. The bottom part will normally dies off when planted in the substrate. Can advise how you plant hornworts or leave it floating like frogbits.
Hornworts are floating plants. Floating plants are good for absorbing nitrates. Fast growing stem plants are good too. You can remove the frogbits once your tank is establised. That's what I did too.
I saw some did plant hornworts but unable to tell how it is done.
Anyway, for now can only standby and see what happens. I'm told never to fix something if it is not broken. Not sure if it can be applied here. hehehe
Today is Day 4. 3 days has passed and I didn't find any dead shrimp (yet). Once past midnight then will pray for Day 5. hahaha.
I'm seeing molting and newborn in the tank so I think it might be best to leave it alone. Keeping finger cross really really very tightly. hahaha
Day 4 pass without death. Another day without sweat. Hahahaha. Into Day 5 now. Need to pray some more. Dunno have to continue like this each day for how long before I can feel safe that my rcs is doing ok. Hahahaha......

Sometimes really depends....you can have shrimp dying off in a well establised tank as well.
Some people didn't really bother much about their shrimps and tank conditions and yet still breeding well.
Some try to perfect every parameter but still fail.
So fast. I thought it would takes some times like at least 2 weeks. I did add in the shrimps only a few hours after I added the ada soil as I was ignorant that the soil would produce lots of ammonia for a minimum of 1-2 weeks. If critical period is really over now, then I can go sleep. almost 5 days now. Yawn.... (Hahaha)
I hope I fall into the 2 group of people you mention cause I'm really lazy to do so many testing and control on the water. The mention of it already scares me off.
Now I do have a new problem. 4 sides of my tank has many white color spots. I'm not sure what they are and I've never have this before. Might be due to the soil. Would anyone be able to tell me what is the white spots?
Are the spots moving? It could be copecods or snail eggs.
Spots not moving. Definitely also not eggs. It did grow bigger. Can't be algae since it is white in color. I'm guessing this is cause by the ada soil but I hope not.
Coule be seed shrimps if you said they grew bigger.
What's seed shrimps? When I mention grew bigger, I was actually thinking in terms of the white spots expanding. It is not alive like snail but more like brown algae kind of grow bigger.

I have to agree with this.
4 days into it. If the shrimps has stopped going rounds and started grazing. I'd say its pretty safe now. I would still get a liquid test kit just to be sure the nitrates isn't too high.
I have dead green spot algae that is white. Another possibility would be limpets. They do move but at a slow momentum. Sometimes I would pop the limpets and see shrimps hanging by the wall and picking it.

Oops... Miss out this point. My shrimps does stop shrimping round and round. Once in a while I'll have about a dozen of them still doing that for a short while. *sigh* lost the nice view of them shrimping. Hahaha. Good thing I recorded.
Back to while spots patches.
Can't be dead green algae right? I've only started this tank few days ago and already got green algae that's dead. Time frame a little too short.
I do have shrimps hanging at the white spots but not sure if they are grazing it. I did remove the upper half leaving the lower since I don't want to disturb the soil and cause another ammonia panick attack.
What harm will it do if this is limpets (not sure what this is)?
