just finish setting up a new tank. went for bare look after having a 50% planted tank. Lost 1 assassin snail and 2 yamatos(cant find). will do a water change in 3 days then again in 2 weeks. But dont know if my fauan will survive 3 weeks in their small 1gallon tank...... can i put them in after a week if ammonia is down? or any other way to ensure their survival? will do a 10% WC every 3 days using distills water.

What I can tell you is that I do daily water changes of 40% (2 coca cola bottles) when they are the temporary holding of 7 liters Styrofoam box. Not sure if you should do the same but it works for me. I never encounter any death during the holding period of 7-8 days.

Hold period is in the Styrofoam box. I didn't do any cycle for the new tank. Simply keep some amount of the leaked tank water and mix with tap water (dose as usual with anti-chlorine like I do for normal water changes). I didn't check the new tank water for any ammonia, NO2, NO3 and stuff like that. Up till today, I've never known what's my tank pH. I'm just lazy. If I have to go through so much testing, I'll probably find it too hard to maintain and give up the hobby. Hahahah.

As you can see from the video, I do not have any filter in the tank but instead I've added substrate. I got fedup when tank leaked and didn't think about the filter. Only thought came to mind is water and shrimps.

I'm not saying what I do is a good practice so you better cycle and test your water for as long as it takes to be ready. It's just that if you use back old tank water and filter, etc, you should be able to cycle the tank faster logically since you get a head start with BB that's already there. What you can do also is to dose some of the liquid or powder form BB that's sold in most lfs. It should speed things up.

I'm just plain silly and impatient. Be anything but don't be like me. Hahahaha
