Weakest Filters

Hi bros,

What are the weakest filters available in the market..? I'm asking because blackwater setups usually have very low flowrates. I understand many people opt to use air driven sponge filters in these setups. Are there other options for hang on or external filters that might work for a small tank?

Tank: ADA Cube Garden 45-P

Most hang on filters I see boast at least 200lph but that's way too much flow. Those with adjustable outputs vibrate a lot at their lowest settings anyway.

I've been considering maybe daisy-chaining 2 Eden-501's with 1 being a dummy (pre-filter). Has anyone tried that..? This would potentially give me a lot more media and reduce the flowrate as well. I just don't know if it'll work.

Any nano filters with sub-100lph flowrates?

Just use a single or double tap on the outflow hose of an Eden 501 and adjust to 60-70%, that'll create a very gentle flow. Can also use an Eheim 2211 too.

If you prefer more filtration volume, can even use an Eheim 2213, then combine with rainbar (drill larger holes to reduce current accordingly) along with an adjustable tap on the outflow (to further tune and adjust the current even lower).

An Eden 501 is already too much flow in a small 1.5ft tank for Apisto. The Eheims would be way too overkill.

Might explore installing the taps. I didn't know they had them for sale.

Thats a great recommendation... i forgot about the poppy glass pipes too. Yeah, those are really effective for reducing current, helps create alot more surface agitation too.

but will it remove the later of oil on the surface, like a HOF does?

im facing the same issue currently, thinking of what filtration method to use for a small apisto setup

The poppy outflow design does help to break up surface oil film, just position the mouth halfway above the surface and it'll churn the water.

oh great. will it create too much noise? because the tank is going to be placed in my room, near my bed haha.

The amount of surface agitation and noise depends on the height of the poppy outlet... so you can just adjust the outlet higher or lower to cater to your preferred noise level.

On another note, I just bought a Resun CY-20 external filter rated for 200lph. Going to try it with the default rainbar before I decide if I should get a poppy outflow. Cheap filter!

I myself am torn between starting a (1)apisto.trifasciata tank or (2)shrimp tank for the new 4G tank i got from Urban Aquaria.

My main concerns surrounding the apisto idea are the issues about low tank volume and finding an appropriate low and quiet flowrate filtration method

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. But, the Resun CY-20 was horrible. The canister was leaky even after cleaning the o-ring and replacing it. Additionally, the outflow was just connecting plastic to another plastic L-joint. Needless to say, that leaked as well. Terrible design. Flooded my desk and shelf.

Brought the Resun back to the shop and traded up. Bit the bullet and got the Eheim Compact 40 instead. Will try it out when I get home later. Its rated for 350lph, which is way too much. I'm hoping the outflow tap can slow the flowrate down to half.

hmm, i did consider the aquacompact, but the container itself is taller the tank im using. and the high flow rate too.. maybe I'll just abort the apisto idea. I feel bad keeping the fishes in such a small tank too breeding would be super duper hard too.

Although the flow rate is for aquacompact is 350L. After you add in all the filter media and sponge, the flow rate will greatly reduce, with the flow rate control on the filter itself, it can further reduce. I using aquacompact 60 and I find its flow rate is horribly slow.

Currently for my apisto caca tank, I am using both totto S filter and up-aqua 120 canister filter. Both filter flow rate are adjusted to the max. My tank size is 50x35x35.

Ahh.. I should have saved myself the heartaches and gone for the Eheim from the start. Good news is, the Eheim Aquacompact 40 that I bought is excellent. The flowrate is highly adjustable and I find that the resulting flow is quite manageable. The filter also runs very quietly (so far anyway). My only gripe so far is the way the design does not allow for much manipulation for the placing of the canister. It almost has to be beside your tank. My tank is an ADA 45-P though, so I have more leeway in terms of height.

I support vannel's choice. Using a eheim aqua compact 400 too, and it works great running with my tem chiller (as mentioned in a separate thread). The fully adjustable flow rate makes it perfect for 1 to 1.5 footers. Attachment 41409

Nice setup there! The AquaCompact 40 seems to fit really nicely for your tank! Awesome stuff. The filter is truly worth the extra cost.

Thanks dude! Yeah, it happens to fit as there's sufficient space. what I like about it is the reliable flow. It has been consistently (as far as my eyes can discern) for the past month odd.
