my PRL that I bought from GC just gave birth last week and I noticed the babies are maroon, black and even bright red all with white stripes. there is even a baby that's pinkish and has golden eyes so I'm starting to think is the shrimp that I paid $25 for is really a prl

Well... if its easy to breed lots of high grade PRL just by having berried PRL, then they wouldn't be so expensive in the first place.
When you buy nice PRL shrimps, they are the best of the lot (the rest of their siblings all got culled), but its still no guarantee that they will produce high percentages of high grade PRL too, so you'll still need to keep culling them to maintain the quality. Welcome to the world of shrimp breeders, there is a reason why breeders have so many tanks.
but any idea why the babies are all weird colours? like shouldn't they be all red and white with just different grade not until so extreme to have black and maroons babies

Sounds interesting. Maybe you should give GC a call to get the most reasonable explanation.
I'm not an expert, but from my limited experience with PRL shrimps a while back, the PRL title these shrimps get is usually to indicate they don't have the golden genes (which results in yellowish tint in the white shells)... but their offspring could be either PRL or PBL, which is why you also see black colored shrimplets.
The other odd colored shrimplets are just random colors that pop up so should be culled.
Btw, did the shrimp berry after for living for a while in your tank? Or was it already berried when you bought it? Just to figure out if there was a possibility it crossbred with other colors or grades in transit.
Maybe other more expert PRL shrimp keepers will chime in to share their experiences.
it was already berried when bought so I suspect it might have crossbred with a golden eye cause some of its off springd have golden eyes

Sorry to hitch a ride on this tread. But when you say culled? What do you exactly mean? Like remove them to a different tank or ???
taken out or moved as they are the "unwanted" offspring . Eg low grades, golden etc

Picture of the babies will be good.
You can use a macro lens attached to your smart phone to capture if you worry you wont be able to take clear picture.

It will be hard to identify these babies then. For your info, shrimplets that are newborn are always transparent and have kind of kinky weird color for their eyes.
It will take about a week at least for them to show their true color.

Oh spid, I've seen how you've had success in breeding shrimps in non chiller tanks. May I ask how you do it? All my shrimps in my previous non chiller tanks were lethargic and they don't seem to be doing well, only successfully bred crs in chilled tanks. Have you bred taiwan bees?

The pink one will be the subjective one.

If PRL parents did not produce a pure line, then most likely the PRL parents were not pure at all. No point to keep this lot as you won't be able to get a pure line out from it if you intended to keep PRL only.

I believe your female PRL is not pure too.
A pure non-golden eye female x golden eye male will not produce golden eye shrimplets in F1. You may get to see them in F2 generation or later.

If it was already berried when you purchase, most likely that it could have crossed with another breed.
Just an assumption, but perhaps you can remove the PRL into another tank.
