For substrate, as I'm not planning to grow any plants, can I use gravel instead? Or do I have to buffer ph with gex soil even for Fire red?

Its best if you use buffer soil as our ph is too high. Plus if you later decide to have crs you can. (But must see if other parameters are ok)
Some people said that Neos will live better in Alkaline water but I find that they do well and colouration is better in acidic water(pH6.5)
Agree with Subdave, You can pretty much keep Caridinas and Neos together.
Recent studies shows that putting recent studies in your statement have a higher percentage of trust people put into your recent studies. What?
I used to keep Fire red and PRL together until my tank leaked... Now I only have PRL in my new tank while waiting for more painted fire red stock to reach Singapore.
I use H.E.L.P soil that I got from Seaview. Bought it as it's very cheap and it's specifically designed for CRS shrimps. No PRL shrimp death after one month so I'm expecting my future fire red to do well in it too.
I noticed some painted red shrimps at green chapter yesterday. If interested, go and buy there.
Gc got nice painted reds. 3.50
Been there a number of times before but no offense to GC, I won't grade those as painted fire red, I will only call them high grade fire red. Maybe the latest batch is different, but the last few times I went there, they weren't to my standard.
EDIT: Oh! Just saw on their facebook that they have new supply of shrimps! Will be interested in checking out their Ellen Wang PRL. IMO it's one of the most value for money PRL you can find in SG.
Can check out their painted fire red and report back here as well.
Wow, your standard is quite high. If you have some, can share their picture?

Sigh.... If I can I would but they all died the last time my tank leaked. Haven't been able to replace them yet. This is how a painted fire red should look like:
Note that the red is uniform and extremely opaque exactly like a suit of armor or PAINT hence the name. Those that I see at GC are not full opaque but still slightly transparent or do not have the red sheen as seen above. That's why I don't consider theirs painted fire red but only high grade fire red.
The example above is not the best example of painted fire red, if you search on google images you can find better photos of painted fire red shrimps. Those that I had were even nicer than the one in the above photo.
I saw yesterday painted red shrimps are not as pretty as above one. So you may say they are still high grade fire red.

Will dosing seachem equilibrium and old sea mud be enough "add-ons" to the water to keep these high grade shrimps?
Try CRS Haven in Tampines.
