Used this once before for one of my old setups. Was an okay soil, probably on par with GEX brands. Plants grew ok but i supplemented them with root monsters. The soil did not turn muddy after quite some time too.

In tended to setup 1ft cube
For hair grass good enough?

The soil should be good enough to carpet hair grass. Just provide adequate water flow and lighting + fertilizers if you dosing.

$17 for 3L bag seems rather steep for a lesser known soil... ADA Amazonia aquasoil is $40 for 9L bag, and its tried and tested with well-documented usage amongst aquascapers.
If you are using ADA ferts, why not just use ADA aquasoil too, save all the guesswork.![]()
FYI to TS, my setups all dosed with a combination of dry and lushgro products. The reason why i opted for the OF soil in my last setup was because:
1) It was cheap and the only stuff happen to be lying around the aquarium shop under my block
2) Soil was a better medium to grow plants, i didnt really like lapis sand.
As mentioned by UA and boss shadow, I also did not know the content of the said soil. (When I questioned the shop aunty, she kept insisting its a good brand soil, so i guess she is just pushing to sell off the stuff with little to no knowledge of the stuff) So i added some OF root monsters and the plants took off quite nicely.

Hi, all got the soil was due to near my place at bukit batok west ave 5. shop owner was also aunty. pushing the OF soil very hard. Saw ADA soil don't know why it not even mention by her.
Apparently, it says on the package, OF soil not suitable for under gravel filter setup. interesting, maybe I drop an email to QianHu see if they can answer with regard to the content of the soil.
Back to drawing board for my 30x30x35 cm
initial intent to setup up 30x30x35 cm with the following
bio ball, SUDO ball + under gravel filter , substrate + OF soil
DIY Fan + light , airpump to provide the flow for filter.
hair grass
Above mention saw a youtube clip from a Japanese. very innovative methods.
now it seems, need to change setup:
OF soil, external filter , light , fan, no co2,
Christmas moss now drift wood
currently doing up hair grass in another tank
60x23x28 cm
ada soil Amazonia powder,
led light
eheim ecco 2233
Yeah, soil based planted tanks are generally not suitable for use with undergravel filter setups... the undergravel filters will break up the soil and degrade them faster, you'll end up with lots of soil dust in the filter and excess nutrients filling the water column. In addition, plant roots will entangle themselves into the undergravel plates and choke it. When the undergravel plates eventually clog up, you'll have to do an entire tank overhaul just to unclog and clean it.
Nowadays its really rare to find people using undergravel filters, unless they are still using gravel substrates without rooted plants (usually those with fish only tanks).
There is a reason why its called undergravel filter, not undersoil filter.![]()
