I have recently bought a Dymax cooling fan for my 12 litre tank but there is still no change in the water temperature even after 3 hours. Did I do something wrong? Please help. Thank you.

I thought a fan might help that tank as there are shrimps inside which include a berried one. Turns out the fan did nothing. The temperature of that tank and my 1.5ft tank without cooling is the same temperature.
Yeah, that's the main drawback of using fans. I'm using a TEM chiller for my 1 footer, and its basically stuck at 28 degrees for hours. Decided to shut it off.
Would it help if I tie an ice pack at the inlet?
Feasible but with the current weather at hand, I would advise against doing that. The sudden change of temperature may likely affect your live stocks.. I have also switched off my fan for my tank, now temperature @ 31.2 C (I used a Power Compact lightbulb so it warms up the water even more)Originally Posted by ZacNg

I have a unit of Dymax Vortex W-5 and Gex Aquacool, my observation is that the latter better cools the tank. The Dymax degraded after a few weeks, though the current weather may play a part.
Aside from the current hot weather... in a small tank volume like yours with a smaller water surface to volume ratio, the combined heat generated from the lights and submersed pump (since you are using an IOS tank) is most likely more than the evaporative cooling effects of the fan (which depends on the area of water surface that can evaporate), hence you don't see much difference in the temperature.

i found a pretty good small filter for small tanks 1-1.5ft
1) call aquaspeed 1.2watts. it didn't raise my temp even for 1 degree without fans or chiller.
flow rate is pretty slow at 100-150L/hr but still better than air bubble filter. lolz. but is really want to remove all heat use air bubble filter.
2) also switch off all your lights on hot days. or use only low power LED.
3) install a big fan like ans3000 or boyu fs120
4) remove all your tank covers
5) i place my tank near my toliets which seems cooler in my house.

You can however, try those desktop kind of fans like this: (Credits to Google)
They will ventilate the surrounding tank area (if it's a small tank like 1ft) Temperature will go down, but expect yourself to top up water almost every 1-2 days. I personally tried and it reduced the temp back to 28C but I got tired of topping up the water, afraid of swinging parameters, etc.. so i just left the tank as it is now.
What i did was:
Pump DIY CO2 during lights on
Switched on air pump during the rest of the lights off.
Plants responded accordingly and quite positively. The moss and fissiden was growing nevertheless, although not as nice as you see those in chilled tanks kind.
If you are planning a fan chilled tank, you might want to read this thread I started quite some time back in 2012.. one of the fan shifus managed to cool his tank quite well.

In this current climate, I believe adding of ice should commence immediately. Try not to add a lot at 1 go. Maintain the temperature drop at 1 degree per half an hour as a start. The use of fan should continue, use the ice to lower the temperature where the fan can't. At least, the fan is helping to remove heat by evaporating the water away.

Hi all, thanks for all your suggestions. I doubt I will get chiller for this tank as I doubt I will have enough budget after getting one for my 1.5ft tank. So what I did was I put an ice pack near to the inlet of the fan. Now it is maintaining the temperature at 25 degrees whereas my 1.5ft tank is at 28 degrees. The shrimps inside seems okay, hope the berried mom can give birth soon.
