The duration of a day, hence photo-period, is determined by where you are geographically. Here in the equator where we are, we get ~12 hours of sunlight all year round. However, in the northern and southern hemispheres, length of day varies with season, long day or short day.
Climate also affects sunlight availability too. In tropical areas where we get plentiful of rain, overcast deprives plants from good sunlight frequently. Hobbyist emulates this by adopting the siesta lighting regime.
I prefer a good continuous 10~11 hours of light into my tank.
BTW, is your keyboard faulty?
