I have an eheim 2211 on my 2ft tank, it's connected to a chiller so flow rate is pretty low. I want to change to a 2213 but how do I do it? There are crs shrimps already in the tank and I'm afraid I will destroy the colony of bb in my 2211 any suggestions on how to change filter without destroying the bb? All comments welcome

    Re: How to upgrade filter

Just transfer the seasoned bio-media from the 2211 to the 2213 (and add more bio-media to fill up the larger canister), just briefly rinse the seasoned bio-media in old tank water before transfer is enough to dislodge any trapped debris (but don't wash it)... the majority of the beneficial bacteria live in the bio-media so your existing cycle should still be maintained. With the larger filter and more bio-media, you cycle should become even more stable too.

I have read that 2211 and 2213 impeller are the same except 2213 has more blades that's why the flow is higher, if its just the flow rate you want to adjust, you can try replacing your existing 2211 impeller with the 2213.

how about upgrading from a hang-on filter to a canister? What's the best way to minimise the water stability for my case? tks

Can use the same method, just transfer as much of the loose bio-media from the hang-on filter over to the canister filter.

If the hang-on filter doesn't have any bio-media, just those filter cartridges, then see if you can put those into the canister filter, so that the beneficial bacteria can help kickstart the bacteria colony in the canister filter... later you can remove the cartridges and fill with more bio-media.

Alternatively, you could also run the hang-on filter and canister filter together in the same tank for a few weeks, that should give the canister filter time to establish a bacteria colony too.
