Was looking through Taobao and saw this LED lighting http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...u=71nga05cfcc9 .My chinese isn't that fantastic but if they put the information of different wavelength I would think that their LED lights are emitting at those wavelength. However, my question is are white LED able to produce different wavelength? From my understanding, it will require red, blue and purple LED to produce those different wavelength right?
So the advertisement is not true? TIA

I'm not a lighting expert or engineer, but from my basic understanding of LEDs, they are manufactured with various methods to mix different calibrated spectrums into one LED and the resulting output mix can be tuned to appear white.

ahh ok..so it's doable and my understanding is wrong..so if this is true.. this LED would be value for money? Since the red is outside the range of 500nm-600nm (which is good for algae)?

I've seen these lights on TaoBao before, and it seems some LFS in Malaysia stock them too. I have not actually used it though and can't find any detailed reviews on it so far, so i can't comment on its efficiency.

I guess you could just order a set and try out, see if its good. Maybe do a review on it.

Hi, for lighting, i would recommend the LED lighting series from BeamsWork, Green Element or Odyssea. All of them i suspect is from a single manufacturer and they produces quality LED lighting at a reasonable price. If you were to buy locally from the retailers, you are able to exchange them if they don't fit or were unsatisfactory. If buy from Internet, LL need to use even if they don't fit or of a poor quality. And yes, please take taobao listings with a pinch of salt. I prefer eBay or Amazon anytime.

For a cheaper option, why not consider a floodlight led? Good wattage, cheap, comes with casing and reflectors! Has anyone tried them here?

I would piggy back one 50cm unit if anyone is to order from TaoBao. I used many LEDs, they are great. Waterproof version is a must for aqua use.

white light led is a blue LED with yellow phosphor coating. the mixing of blue and yellow light produces a perceived white light.
the other technique of producing white light is by using red, green and blue LED. again, colour mixing of these 3 colours in correct proportion produces white light.
