The stock camera in my current phone (Samsung Note 3) is good for taking normal photos, but it's not as good at taking proper close-up macro photos. So i recently ordered a cheap clip-on macro lens from eBay to see if it can help the phone camera capture more detailed photos of inhabitants in my tanks.

Here are some close-up photos of a male Neocaridina Davidi (Sakura Grade) taken with the clip-on macro lens...

Granted that the photo quality is still not as high as if it was taken with professional DSLR cameras and more expensive specialized lenses... but considering that i'm not an expert photographer and its just a cheap macro lens clipped onto a phone camera, i think the results are quite good.

Very nice, more economic than getting a macro lens for a SLR. Could you post a picture of the macro clip on lens. I've been looking around the handphone shops for this lens but have not had success.

This is more than good enough a picture compare to some where the picture is not even this sharp. Unbelievably amazing using a camera phone with cheap macro lens.

Did you put your phone on a tripod or something or simply taken the picture with your hand (very steady hand needed)

Its those clip-on type design... like this:

    Photo from eBay.

The package comes with a wide angle lens and a macro lens, i guess the clip can fit on most new phones. I think local shops probably do sell but have to ask around.

Alternatively you can also just order it from eBay, here is the seller link i ordered from: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/141167605...84.m1497.l2649

There are many other versions (some with more lenses), so do search the other listings and check those out too.

My hands are also the shaky type... so what i did was just support the phone against the tank glass so that its more steady.

The phone camera and macro lens has a limited focus range anyways, so i have to be very close to the object when taking the photos, therefore can only capture shots of fishes or shrimps which venture to the front of the tank. Once any of them come into focus range, i quickly take as many shots as possible, after that sift though the photos to get the best ones.

Hahaha.... nice. Glad that you share your experience. Think I might want to try and get some good shots of my shrimps. I doubt I can find a clip on macro len for my iphone 3gs because of the curve design. Anyway, glad to know that this kind of shot can be done. Hope you didn't have to wait too long for the shrimp to be in the right distance. hehehehe

There should be some lenses which can fit the 3GS, perhaps the ones that stick on by magnetic attachment? Maybe can search for those too.

Yeah, it does take some patience waiting with camera and lens ready on hand... like hunter watching prey slowly come within striking distance.

The focusing area is quite small. How much cropping was done on the original image?
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.

Only you have the time and patience. I won't be able to. By the time the shot comes, my hands probably shaking after the long stiff wait. lol

Yeah, the phone camera only focuses where i specifically tap the screen on my phone so the focus area is very small. Have to chase after the shrimps across the front of the tank and take dozens of photos, just to get one good shot.

I didn't need to crop the above photos though, they are the better shots so i could just re-size them directly from the original resolution.

Not many have the patience and time plus steady hand like UA. Knowing the trick is one thing. Actually able to do is another. I for one won't be able to. lol.

I do enjoy pictures of such clarify. Post more if it's doesn't takes up too much of your patience and time. Hehehehe

Most recent close-up photo of an Indostomus Paradoxus, taken with the same clip-on macro lens...

These tiny fishes have been living in my tank for months and i only catch a glimpse of them occasionally... really rare to be able to actually snap a good photo of one!

Is this related to Doryichthys species?
They have similar features... any idea?

Re: Phone Camera + Macro Lens

I recently got the macro lens attachment to my iphone too but I cannot focus the subject unless it is very close to it? Is it normal or just the iphone len issue?

Re: Phone Camera + Macro Lens

i am also using the clip on lens for my shrimp photos! Yours seems to be a lot sharper than mine, the quality of the clip on lens makes a difference too. mine have very limited focus area and focus distance.

    sharing mine below.

Yeah, they are similar to pipefishes and apparently also related to sicklebacks. Very interesting fishes.

They stay very small though... the one in my photo is only 2cm length.
