The most basic tests are ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. pH is useful too.
You can look at the API Freshwater Master Test Kit, its a test kit package that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, high and low range pH levels.
I am currently cycling my water and is planning to introduce red cherry shrimps into the tank as soon as the water parameters are right.
What sort of test kit(s) should I buy as someone who is absolutely new to the hobby? Any good kits to recommend?

API definitely!
Recent studies shows that putting recent studies in your statement have a higher percentage of trust people put into your recent studies. What?
For the case of red cherry shrimps, is it mandatory to buy kits to test for other parameters like water hardness too?
That test isn't so necessary for red cherry shrimps, though its still good to get if you can... those shrimps can adapt to quite a wide range of water hardness, as long as you do a slow acclimation process before adding them to your tank and any changes in hardness levels in the tank is gradual.
Though if you start to see the shrimps dying everyday, and all the other parameters are okay, then you could look into using a GH test kit to check if there is an issue with the water hardness (ie. might somehow be way too high or way too low, so the shrimps have difficulty molting).
i missed out this thread. i bought SERA brand test kits yesterday. Will give it a try on the readings soon
