It's not a must. I have friends who keep crystal red shrimps at room temperature of around 30 degrees. However, I will still recommend you to use a chiller for the tank. Cooler water temperature is not only good for the general well being of the shrimps, but also good for the plants as well.

I see. But are your friends successful in breeding them in temp around 30 degrees?

I just went to check with one of my friends. She said her crystal red shrimps have yet to breed at such temperature. So getting a chiller might be a worthwhile investment if you are looking to breed them.

I used to keep my crs without chiller and manage to have one of it breed but eventually water evaporation cause my tank parameters to swing n mostly end up death. Now keeping my shrimps in air conditioned place n is getting much more breeding. So I say go for chiller.

If you're on a tight budget for a chiller. You can consider DIY a peltier chip cooler. A simple one would cost you about $50. The only costly item would be the power supply which will be around $35 for a 12v 6amps peltier 12706.. If you wanted a more efficient heatsink. You can look at the ones people used for their gaming rigs. For about $40-$80. I am currently running a 12706 on a 2ft hooked up to Eden 501. Coupled with a adjustable voltage acdc i set a PC fan running 24/7 on 7.5v Directed on the surface of the water and is able to acheive 26c-26.4 on a hot afternoon.Top up wise. I refill 1.5l of RO water every 2-3 days. Of course, surrounding temperature and where you placed your tank plays a vital part of your water temperature as well as what type of lighting(led,t5) you use.

To answer your question. It is possible to keep crs in a non chilled tank but they'll be sluggish and wont be breeding.

Depending on your environment, if aircon room then no need chiller. CRS will thrive and breed in 24-25 degree cel

Curious if CRS can be kept with Yamato? I currently have CRS in a small tank without chiller. Planning to transfer them into my bigger chiller tank that houses tetras and Yamato. Do they only breed at 24-25 temp or ok if 26? Thanks.

I'm more worried that he tetra will find themselves with some yummy fry as live food.

So, if I were to keep CRS and some guppies will the chiller make it stressful for the guppies? Or any other fish for the matter.

Bro reeshee, my advice is not to keep guppies in CRS tank. I reckon you do not want your guppies to savor on you CRS shrimplets.

my advice is do not keep any fish with CRS as they might eat them and give them stress

tetras will not be able to eat the adult CRS but it will eat the off spring, from my experience yamatos tend to be very active and cause stress to my shrimp population, their big size makes it easy to bully CRS or shrimplets therefore i do not recommend mixing them, 26 is possible to breed but like people have said 24/25 is a good temperature

Hi guys, thanks for replying... Very tough decision! I am deciding what to house in my tank when it's cycled.. shrimps or fishes... It's a 12 gallon fluval edge tank. Fishes are colourful and more lively.. but shrimps are so cute!! Haha.. don't bother me.. anyways, thanks for your advice!

I went ahead and got crystal red with golden yellow backs. Living in harmony. Aaaaaand I got a chiller as well.

leeernest, you are aware that if your crs and cbs make love, you may get ugly shrimplets?

Do you use air pumps for your RCS?
