So my question is, how to make the hairgrass grow faster? Even the staurogyne repens are growing faster than the hairgrass...

Patients hairgrass take a long time to spread. How deep is your soil? Are your hair grass planted very deep into the soil?
Have they rooted? Trimmed, to encourage growth.
Runners half the parent size can be replant from parent plants.

Thanks for the reply! I already planted them for 4mths so I guess my patience is running out soon haha... The soil is about 2" thick and I planted the grass 1" into the soil... They have all rooted and spread runners very slowly... Yes I did cut some of the runners and planted them all around... But all just too slow to be normal as I've read from others' experiences...

    Re: Dwarf Hairgrass not spreading...

Yeah, 4 months should be more than enough time for the hairgrass to create a full carpet (especially in tanks with Co2 injection, fert dosing and ample light)... in my 2ft planted tank, i only used one small pot of Tropica 1-2-Grow Eleocharis sp. 'Mini' and it grew into a dense carpet during that time, and i only used one unit of the Up Aqua Z-Series LED light, instead of 2 units like in your tank.

Not sure if the hairgrass species matters though, was your hairgrass the type bought in pots or tied to mesh in containers from LFS? Did you start planting initially with a little or alot of hairgrass?

In your photo, i noticed a portion of the hairgrass in the middle area seems to be overshadowed by the java ferns, maybe try to move or trim the background java ferns so that they don't block light to the hairgrass.

Other than that, your setup seems to be ideal for those plants... its indeed quite puzzling why the hairgrass isn't growing as fast as expected.

    Re: Dwarf Hairgrass not spreading...

Bro UA, thanks for the reply! I have bought the hairgrass from a LFS near jalan kayu, 3 pots of them... I planted them in strands of 4-6, 1 inch apart... The java ferns are temporary measure as I think I've overdosed the ferts and some green furry algae on my rock and repens, so I threw in the ferns to use up the excess nutrients... Will remove the fern soon... If the grass still not growing, I guess I'll have to replace them with tropica's 1-2-grow... Even my repens can grew from a stalk to a few now...

You may want to keep trimming your hairgrass. It will really encourage new growth to spread.

I had a hard time with jap hairgrass mini and shifted to the normal version of dwarf hairgrass (sp parvula) and they spread like wildfire to make a carpet in a month. Trimming them makes them spread faster.

How short should i trim the hairgrass? Will 1.5cm from the root enough?

I think I had a similar problem as you.. Had a co2 injected tank for 4 months without progress.. However for my new tank, it carpeted very quickly.. Now I have to trim every week. I used Ada powder soil (the fine grain kind). Read that fine soil is better for carpeting plants to spread.. And I reaped the reward.. The soil is expensive though.. Maybe you can try other substrate. Here is the photo uploadfromtaptalk1408382871204.jpg
