Hi all, i'm just curious, what do you feed your macs with? I'm purely feeding mine pellets, lost a few due to live feed such as guppy fries. No longer trust live feeds, even if it's self bred. However, i noticed some feeding them with crickets or mealworms. Have the temptation to follow but worry that i might lose the fish again. Inputs greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You may give an assortment of fish foods, though there are successes of Mac spawns with just pellet foods in their diets. Key is ensure that fish foods are clean and leftover waste are siphon off early. Water quality is one of the most critical challenges on Mac.
IEarly and correct identification if disease(s) is key to avoid fatality.

The biggest headache is the hidden diseases that live food may bring along. Hence i'm strictly feeding on pellets. It's hard to control though, bought a packet of meal worms only to throw it away.

one pack of meal worms is way too much for a few Mac, though it can last for weeks but risk of unhealthy meal worms is not worth the risk. You should not feed MW everyday.
This is where a small interest group esp for rare wild Betta can be useful, not only experience sharing, holiday fish care and food share/purchases etc.
Hey, the cost of transportations over time can be higher than the cost of Mac - thanks for the 1st world standard. They tell you not to spend (hobby?), next will be not to commute. Anyway, toll increase at causeways will be ultimately absorbed by consumers, so keep our hobby to the minimum.

Didn't even feed any to the fishes. Don't want to take the risk.. Like you said, the cost is already so high, no point risking the pair so long as they are willing to take pellets, it's fine. Rather waste a packet of meal worms then to kill the fishes!!

    Hi Edwin1987,
There was this post saying that lack of calcium would result the egg shell being too thin/weak...resulted failed hold by the male. Yellow poos from the male were thought to be the egg shells.
May try feeding guppy or ikan bilis. They did not want to eat Betta splendens.

Pallets are definitely safe, but I think a good mixture of foods albeit riskier, can grow healthier and happier macs.
Some stores sell $0.50 worth of meal worms like K&K in Tampines.

I feed a mixture of 1) meal worms, 2) flakes, 3) pellets, 4) frozen blood worms, in order of frequency. Still relatively safe I imo.

Ok.. i might go with meal worms. But is there a need to wash the worms before feeding ?
