Qn:
1)What is your definition of a cheap pleco? Plecos are never cheap. Unless you are referring to the common sucker fish; $1 for 1
2)Why do you want to put cheap pleco in a planted tank?

Hi,
ha ha...I just learnt not to have a pleco in planted tank and only few species are acceptable and those are usually X pensive.
ottos dying! I also have those experienced before.I read somewhere that they sometime suffer from intestinal diseases. Dunno what thingie, so when I buy ottos, I would buy from regular LFS that has not much casualty yet. Also I'll buy with some buffer, in case they decided to die

You can try the Dwarf pleco-like thingy, Sturisoma Festivium or aka Whiptail Catfish or Helicopter at NA.
Hi,

Ya...the helicopter sucker fish looks beautiful but $10 each leh..![]()
buffer = referring to buy few more on top of what u intended to have.

ten bucks now?? I bought one at $8, and later on another one at $9. Really have been increasing.
Your best bet will be Otos. Never fail.

anyway, they get pretty big.
Cheers,

You got to acclimatise your Otos slowly. Once they adapted to your tank, they can be very hardy fishes.

So can those $1 sucker be put in a planted tank? Mine is a 3ft tank.

They don't eat algae.
Many plecos are herbivores including the "cheap" ones. Most of them are not suited for planted tanks simply because they eat plants. The few of the planted-tank-friendly plecos are mentioned above. L47 is another one, but it is rare and expensive.

BC: FYI. Please read the sequence.
They ("refer to The Cheap $1 Sucker Fish") do not eat algae.
I use a school of L15 for clearing my algae on top of pther algae eaters.
If one wants to use sucker fish to clear algae, then this is a very poor choice. Most planted hobbyist would recommend at leat an oto to begin with the algae eating process.
Can I deduce your statement "most of them" as The Cheap Sucker Fish or Most Plecos?

I was refering to "cheap sucker fish" eating algae and plants, although they eat a lot of fish food too.
I think the "cheap sucker fish" belongs to the pleco family too.

The "Cheap Sucker Fish" are known as Common Pleco. They are hardly referred as an L number.
Perhaps your sucker fish are good algae eaters which I did not enjoy this benefit.
Can also try those Chinese Algae Eater (or Golden Algae Eater). Quite effective as well.
However they may harass fish like Discus sometimes.

I saw a page where these Common Pleco are referred to as L021/ L023.

Due to the widespread nature across the amazon river, these suckers are not imported in as an 'L' number which add prestige to the pleco family.
Of course, given the family, background, they are assigned a 'L' number.
Imagine going to a LFS and ask for 'L021/3' rather than asking if the boss has a eat shit fish in his shop.
