Acceptable nitrate range?

Before water change. Nitrate level was around 40ppm. After water change, nitrate around 20 ppm. Did a 45% water change. Is the current nitrate level acceptable? Or should i do another water change?

Not much plants. Just a fern and a nana. Pretty hardy fish.

20ppm is usually safe range but keep monitoring to ensure it doesn't climb above 40ppm if you have fishes. I don't see why it would climb again after such a large WC if your tank is cycled.
