i seem to recall that this plant produces a lot of white sap when the stem is cut....
My copy of A Guide to the Wildflowers (i.e. weeds) of Singapore indicates that this is Pilea microphylla, a member of the nettle family. The sappy plant I recalled is another species. P. microphylla originates from South America (another alien!!!) and has no known submersed form.
Interestingly, there are several genera of common local weeds listed in the book which are known to have aquatic species..... e.g. Lindernia, Alternanthera, Cyperus, Hydrocotyle and Ludwigia. Don't ask me liao, go buy the book instead. And dont' ask me where to buy and how much either. I hate those questions.
i also tried growing them too. HAHA.. thought i was the only one. it grew quite well for 1 month but then they just die..........
oo well.. too bad if it can't grow submerged, could have been a cheap substitute for HC
