Re: First attempt on planted- Nano 2.5G

Returning back to work after a long weekend with pleasant surprise!

Monte Carlo is growing well! No visible signs of growth for the Staurogyne Repens just yet.

Last rescape on 3 October 14, conducted 30% wc and boosted excel to mitigate diatoms, resulting in cleaner tank, scape and greener leaves but two enders were sacrificed during the process

    Photo updates, 13/10/2014:

Micranthemum are growing very quickly! Those nearer to the front of the tank are starting to overlap, can anyone advise if I should start trimming now or till they reach a stage where they become more "compact"?

You can let the MC grow out abit more, around 2-3cm thickness then its time to trim regularly... basically when you start seeing the top leaf layers starting to completely shade the bottom layers. The MC carpet will gradually grow more and more dense with each trim.

It does seems to be growing, but the funny thing is, if you were to look closer the extreme front end of the tank does seems to be where they are concentrating.

This just puzzles me, because at the rate the C3 is flowing the water out, that is the same location where there is most disturbance.

    Any kind advise on this?

Yeah, plant growth is usually the best in areas of the most circulation... they constantly get more supply of Co2 and nutrients than other areas, so are able to grow much faster.

Thanks for the clarification! I was thinking if the light was alittle too intensive at the front and had shifted the lights =X

The algae is normal... its just unsightly, but nothing an algae scraper can't remove.

I guess you have a nice coating of various algae on the tank glass and equipment because there aren't any otocinclus in the tank at the moment. If your tank is cycled, can just introduce 1 or 2 small otocinclus into the tank, and they will happily munch up all the green algae on the glass and equipment within a day (except the green spot algae, those usually still need algae scraper to manually remove completely).

Alternatively, you could also just add small nerite snails instead, just 1-2 horned nerite snails will do the same job (but abit slower), they'll also help eat up abit of the green spot algae too.

Thanks for the guidance again UA, I have tried introducing Otos a month of 2 back but it wasn't pleasant. It died the next day and my shrimps were happily feeding off it's body. I would love to get another 1 or 2 soon but not before I understand what caused the unfortunate incident. Any help on how I should acclimatise it?

I guess if the other livestock were okay and the previous oto died just a day after introduction into the tank, then you probably just happened to have gotten a weak one.

Moving forward, the next time you buy otos at a LFS, pick the ones that are full colored (not pale or transparent) and plump with round bellies, and actively grazing around (don't pick the skinny ones that just sit around listlessly). That will greatly increase the chances of getting healthier otos.

Before introduction to your tank, do a drip acclimation process (around 1 hour will usually be sufficient), then carefully net it into the tank.
