Hi all, as the title states, can I mix both Dicrossus filamentosus and maculatus together in the same tank? Many thanks to the advice provided!

Can be done. But once they are in the same tank, you will have a hard time to differentiate them again.. Both of them kind of looks similar. And I think they will need a big space.
There is no actual reports of them cross breeding yet, but please remember that they are from the same family and there might be a chance for this to happens.

Coming soon: And any other species of Apistogramma!!

Re: Dicrossus filamentosus and Dicrossus maculatus in same tank?

Hmmm alright thanks for the info Milk I'll just have to give it a thorough thought then cause there are some wild Maculatus from AC that I want to get, but I have a male Filamentosus left over probably due to some bad tap water supply issues. Have to probably check when they wash the water tanks in the future I guess. The fact that it's a wild Maculatus makes me want to get it but the price... is another problem haha but yea I was wondering if they would cross breed so thanks for helping!
Another thing I'd like to ask is, are wild Dicrossus more colourful than the tank bred ones? I've read that wild apistos are generally more colourful but I've not found much info about the Dicrossus.

" When they wash the tanks"!! You mean someone wash the tanks for you!! What a good life!!!
Wild caught Dicrossus in general are hard to come by. My importer friends mentioned that they usually don't travel well. And if i remember correctly... this is the second time AC is bringing them in.. With the first time of 100% DOA. So having those swimming in their tanks is something a blessing. A blessing that we have a chance to see a live one swiming in a tank.
Netherless to say something nice specimen and also something that interest you.

Wild species of apistogramma are nice in their finnage and superb specimens have the best of both. Nice finnage and colorful.
But superb condition apistogramma are very hard to come by nowsday.
In regards to commercially breed apistogramma, they are and can be super colorful. But these apistogramma will lack the natural looks and are generally ODD looking (in my personal views). The finnage of commercially breed apistogramma usually will come "stunned" and only the color super well developed. Because they (apistograma) do not have a choice to reject colors ehanced food or hormoes induced food.

There are a lack of information online due to the interest of dwarf cichlid is getting smaller. And especially for Dicrossus, like i say they don't really travel well and even they managed to travel, you will usually get those "un-developed' pieces. So naturally, they do not caught the attention of hobbyist.
