    Was I fooled?

I am a newbie in planted tank and this is what happened 1 month ago.

I went to a LFS ('specialised' in planted stuffs) and asked for a PL light.
From what I gathered and read from the internet, I was always told that plants lighting requirements are measured by Watts per gallon.

I bought a 15 gallon curved front light from this LFS.
(This is not the first trip, he sort of knows me cos I bought plants from him before).
He seemed quite knowledgable in planted tanks and has show tank full of healthy plants.

I asked for a filter and light to match my tank. Telling the owner that I need to plant GLOSSO and highlight requirment plants.

I was recommended a HOB filter and a PL Clip on light (11W) and was told that it was sufficient.
He kept saying that Watts is not important but its the type of tube. A 11W PL is as good as a high wattage FLourescent and more than enough for my 15gallon tank. And was told not to believe the internet postings on the Watts per gallon 'myth'.

BUT It was not true.... I had to remove my 2x15watts flourescent lighting from another tank to add on to the incompetent clip on light later when I realised that what he told me was not quite true.

OK.. was what he said true or I was just too gullible?
I don't wish to distrust anyone who tried to give good advice but I felt I was fooled after so many comments that my lighting was insufficient.

ahhh.. Thats one of the reason why we encourage members to read up before you set off into this hobby. I can't agree or disagree on that advise the owner gave you, perhaps he has his reasons. If without any information and if you would have told me 11watts for a 15 gal tank, then I will not believe a word of it.

on another hand, he (owner) wants the biz transaction, so pushes his available product to you.

from this experience, you learnt somethings... when i first started out, its more of a trial and error. So, now there are forums like AQ around, which you can ask before you act.

Don't worry or feel like you have been cheated. Just take it as an experience

btw, mind telling us which lfs is that?

I still feel 'betrayed' because I had been a 'loyal' customer for him and neverrrrr bargain.

Maybe I am not a guy and looked too keen to start up one proper planted tank.

I read up alot but I still believed him because he was just so nice.

PS. Yes you are so right. He didn't have the 2 tubes PL that I always wanted!
He didn't have anything except Clip on.
Even loaned me his own clip on when I realised he gave me a faulty one (not his fault..just mislooked honestly)

my tank is about 23 gallons (do note it should be US gallons) and I have 108W of lights. and yes they are PL tubes. you can just use normal daylight tubes which is 6500K.

don't need to spend $$ on "special" plant lights just make sure it is not too yellow and enough wattage.

heck my 6 gallon 1ft cube already has 16W PL light.

btw I do not like those single clip-on type of lights. over time the clip will wear and the light might just fall into the water.

For lighting and gear do suggest you pay Nature Aquarium a visit. Speak with Chan.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

I went to NA few times but it was already after I've set up the tank.
I'll just make this tank low tech tank for now.

Just a suggestion, perhaps if you still intend to plant glosso.. you can reduce the water level..

Hence, more light can reach the bottom of the tank.

    Thanks for the feedbacks.

After the incident, I learn to appreciate the forum more than before. Also not to be so naive and implusive.

'One man's trash is another man's treasure'
So.. now I'll frequent the market place area more to exchange or buy stuffs rather than straight from the stores cos I'm sure every hobbiyist has their 'trash' of the moment.

Afterall, trust and honesty are not easy to come by..not to mention when there is profit involved.

    Happy planting.
